FS: New factory crate engine 944, dated 1985

I have a 944 engine for sale that came with a 944 I purchase in an estate auction in 2003. The paperwork that came with the car included a receipt for the engine that says Crate engine, new, stock '85NA. When I purchased the car, in the San Jose area, it was clear from the parts that came with it that the PO was intending to race. For example, it came with a complete racing suspension (new, in box) from Elephant Racing, along with spare 951 brake and A-arms, and dozens of other spares. Just have the engine to sell now...been holding onto to it to see if there were any disappointments with the engine in the car, but haven't needed it. Have no idea what it is worth, since although new it obviously would have to be disassembled and rebuilt with new assembly lube and gaskets. Stored carefully, and came to me on an engine stand. Who knows how long it's been on that stand. Interested in offers. Engine is located in Minneapolis.

I am interested but I need to better understand what you have. So are you saying this is a Porsche New engine or a shop overhauled engine?

The block is probably bent from being on the engine stand for so many years hanging. Makes sense, right?

Man, I am just bored and it made me think about my Grandpa telling me not to sit the rifle in the corner with the barrel leaning against the wall after a hunting trip.

Also, I read a long debate thread one time that people were actually discussing the possibility of long term sustained weight on the aluminium causing it to bend ever so slightly after spending decades on an engine stand. It got really debated with formulas and a lot of BS.

Hmmm I say no. Aluminum castings are not very flexible. Brittle to an extent but not flexible.

But since there is that possibility I figure 1/2 price at the most

The applied stress would have to exceed the elastic deformation stess limit and cause plastic deformation; the engine is likely fine.

im sorry but this is crazy
the likelyhood of the the block warping from sitting on an engine stand is a silly thing to consider. ive had multiple race motors spend years on an engine stand with no problems other then a seal or 2 drying out

Yeah saying the block is bent is a dick way to try and low ball someone. No chance in hell of bending that, it would crack first.

That said, if its been sitting that long I fully agree with you that it needs a full tear down IMO before even trying to turn it over.

Without any personal interest since I no longer have my 944 (bought a 928) if I were you I would be very happy with $500 for the motor as it sits. If you take the time and have the paperwork to prove you refreshed it yourself I would say it might be worth as much as $1200 to the right person. You need that paperwork proof though.

Be sure and turn it over by hand, and prime the oil pump, to make sure it doesn't score the hell out of stuff if you ever try it yourself!

I'm not looking to buy and I have no association with the seller but the idea of a 944 engine with everything being within the new spec range is just plain cool to me. That is of course if this really is a new engine.
