ended up buying new - now looking for Koni inserts for a reasonable price for early struts.

Don't get the koni, go with Bilsteins.

why do you say that? I had factory Koni's on my '83 and they did a nice job. My only experience with Bilsteins is in BMW's, and they ride a little harsh.
