1984 Transmission issues

HELP!!!!!!

Hey my 1984 928 is having transmission issues once again. The fluid is filled correctly. I am getting a little leakage out of the front seal.

However when I am driving down the road and she goes in to fourth it revs like it falls in to neutral. When I give it a hard rev it will catch and work as it should. This will happen at times and at times it runs just as perfectly as it should. All other gears work perfectly and shift crisp and strong.

Could a clogged filter or something small cause this?

Same problem...,

Hey Brian,

Have you resolved your trans problem? I just bought a 84 automatic with the exact same symptoms. I would be really interested to find out if you resolved yours. For now I am going to:

(i) check trans fluid level
(ii) check vacum system
(iii) adjust shifter cable
and
(iv) fix it before I drive it too much..,

Let me know,

thanks,

Al

Al,

I have an 84 automatic setting on a pallet that works fine (shifted fine driving around my complex anyway), CHEEP to local buyer who can pick it up, price highly likely to go up after I get a chance to verify how neat a Euro is vs US. Looks like most Euro had a 2.73 rear end compared to the US 2.20, but I need to lift it up to see the code.

Yes the fluid and filter change took care of the slipping out of overdrive, however I am still having the fluid lead out of the front of the tranny. SO I think I am at a Torque coverter seal or a front pump O ring. Either is such a pain to get to its going to be a trek.

I believe when the cold weather came in the fluid was getting thick and it would not hold 4th in. Runs great now!

Thanks
Brian

Trans. fix..

Hey Brian,

I hope my fix is as easy as yours. If not, it sounds like there is local guy with another trans that I could swap...

Hey Leo, Yes, I took the plunge yesterday and bought a project car:

IF there is no Overdrive in a Porsche what would you call 4th gear in an automatic? The same transmission hooked to a Mercedes is Overdrive?

These mercedes automatics seem to be very sensitive to fluid levels and changes. Strong as an OX though.

Dunno about the auto, but the top gear in the manual is 1:1, but I don't see it means anything since the final drive including the rear end ratio isn't far off from cars that do have overdrive 5th.

new toy..

Hey Man,

To be honest, when I saw your Red Euro I decided that I needed to unload the Miata and get a real car. I knew I wanted a black on black with silver wheels.

It had been listed on Craigslist for 4,200 for two months in Orange County.
On Monday morning I sold the Miata for $3,500, and then bought the 928 for $3,200 in the afternoon.

I got some great advice from the boards on how to resolve the fourth gear issue, which I will attempt to implement this Sunday. I might work on my car this Sunday morning. I'll let you know if I do so you can check it out...

later,

Al
