What would you have written the check for?

What he paid and what he sells it for is his business, but I started wondering how much would I have written a check for if I found it. I'm thinking $20k, but hard to say what I would do if it really happened. What would you have written a check for?

Nothing against this car, but since I am not a collector, what would I do with it? Perhaps if I thought I could re-sell it I would be interested, but not at $20k.

I guess the real question is how many people are looking for low mileage automatic 82 928s? Presumably not to drive, but to look at, as driving it devalues what makes it worth much, right?

that would be the question......

if it was a Euro S, there may be some extra value in it. if, if, and more if's.

otherwise, it's just a low mileage, needs attention, US spec auto 928, of which there are plenty of them around (excepting the mileage issue, of course).

it's a neat "barn find", but the cost of getting it in running condition would have to be figured into the deal. And that could get plenty expensive......

With nothing but cleaning, and nothing serious there either, just a careful clearing of the dust so people can see what is there, and I am pretty sure we are talking $50k+ to the right collector.

No way would I be driving it even 50 feet, pure flip.

No way it will go $50k! If it does then someone needs their head examined. It is no better than the 4th lowest mile 928 in the USA (don't get me wrong, that is saying something...BUT). There were probably more '82 928's built than most other model years, and it is pretty basic as later 928's go. Even a 3spd auto.

Now all that said, the car is really spectacular and has a nice color to it and is certainly pristine. The MUCH rarer collectible 928 to have would be Chuck Z's '78 928 Kermit! That car has less than half the miles of this car, was a 1st year production of fewer cars produced, and has the now ULTRA RARE op-art (nee...Pasha) interior in PERFECT condition! I think he is about to finally sell it, but it has not been able to attract attention above $43k or so in the past. Still big money, but if you use that as your baseline the '82 car should be around $30k - $35k. Still big money for a 928 w/ the S body competition pack...

There is an '89 GT owned by a friend of many in the 928 community that he paid close to $100k for a few years back and Chuck Z is familiar w/ a GTS with less than 200 miles on the odo! How many others are out there with less than the 3400 miles this car has on it? The more there are the less this car is worth.

Purchase price was south of $15k I am certain, and I believe closer to $10k but Kie has not told me, and won't I am sure of that!

I would LOVE to own the car and would be one of the collectors that would NOT drive it...well, it would get about 200 miles a year on it going to shows and such. Not a good idea to leave them parked to much. If I owned the car it would be seen at ANY SHOW I could get it to! OCIC's FOR SURE, I would try and get it to at least one of the BIG shows each year, as well as D/FW and Austin/San Antonio shows! It would be an easy winner at most any show it goes to.

These extremely low mileage 928's don't seem to really be worth that much more than a mildly low mileage 928. Case in point, this '91 S4 with only 3900 actual miles sat for sale forever until it finally sold for around $20K.

They started at $35K, then $30K, then $25K and then someone finally bought it. Granted, she ain't the prettiest of all available colors and it doesn't appear to be in as nice a condition as the '82 car, buuuut, it is a '91, and the mileage was the same. And a little cleanup on this '91 would have gone a long way too. Go figure?

Its much harder to find a really nice older 928 than it is to find a really nice newer one. This 82 screams unique unubtainium, so what its worth could easily turn out to seem silly to everybody but the final two bidders.

I guess that might be true. Chuck Z's green '78 car is probably one of such cars, and it's most likely worth upwards of $50K. Sooo, maybe this is a great deal. Though one would have to wonder, if a Pelican found such a car, would it really be worth anything or even considered a special 928 at all?

Maybe I have this collector thing all wrong, but my impression from the time Chuck put the Frog on ebay was that the selling price wouldn't be anything close to $50k, more like double that or more. Ebay was just some advertising with the serious talking done privately.

I may be wrong, but I'm under the impression that anything over $50K will buy "the frog", though I could me mistaken. Only Chuck Z can really answer that question for sure.......

as I am on both on R-list (less and less) and Pelican, in my case I would say no.

the last 928 I remember being brought back from the near dead, involved a good $5K to make it reliable (probably not in this case, but....). this doesn't mean that this car isn't worth 20, 30, or 50K, it just means that for me the value must be in something unique----I discussed this in my previous post.

I am reminded that, in the end, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Kermit is WAY more special than the '82. Less than half the miles and a first production year. I agree w/ you that Chuck would probably not let Kermit go to anyone for less than $50k and if he thought it would be locked up in a garage and not shown I don't think he would sell it for any money! Chuck is a lot like me. We love our cars and we love to share them with the public in general at various shows. He has been VERY good about getting Kermit out in the public eye where it belongs. It is the first of a long line of great V8 P-cars and he wants it preserved as such, and I certainly don't blame him for that.

Now if I had that winning lottery ticket, I would have Kermit in MY garage! Maybe I'll end up w/ Blue82, but Kie is talking about hanging on to her now. I think to big a deal has been made about it and he is thinking future sale for more money... That is just speculation from some of the posts of his that I have read. Earlier this year he had another super score with a Lambo Countach apparently too! This guy is living right to have both these in half a year or less! My hat is off to him! I have NEVER been that lucky!

He and Willhoit should go to Vegas together. They'd probably do very well out there. I think some people just naturally have great luck when it comes to material things (lotto, gambling, horses, etc.), while others, such as myself, lose every single time. But I'm lucky in other ways, which more than makes up for it, and is much more rewarding too.
