Basic Stereo Question

Hi, I'm new to this forum and new to Porsche ownership. I have an 87 928 with the basic 4-speaker and cassette deck, and want to upgrade to nicer speakers and CD head unit. I have a question regarding the speakers. What size replacements can I fit in the two doors and what size are the two rear speakers by the rear seats? The door speakers are oval shape and measure approximately 3.5" x 6". Will 4x6 fit in the doors? I have not had the rear panels out so I have no idea what size the speakers in the rear are. You all seem like a great bunch of guys. Thanks for your help.

Background: I'm an American living in Australia. This Porsche was originally exported to Japan and then imported to Australia. It is left-hand drive however, and I may bring it back with me to the states. It only has about 57,000 km or 36,000 miles on it. I've never owned a car that was this much fun to drive.

Factory speakers are two round ones in the door, one about 5" and one smaller about 2" or 3", so you may not have factory speakers. Best to post a picture. Door speakers don't have much room behind them, so that can be an issue too.

www.crutchfield.com is a good place for checking factory sizes, but first find out what you have now.

Some Japanese cars were imported from the USA, but if its a original Japanese market car (vin has zzz in it) it can cost as much as $10k or more to import to the USA and have it federalized. Canada is much easier, but it would have to go to a citizen for registration.

Thanks for the reply. Crutchfield does not have the correct information for my car. There is only one speaker in each door and it is this odd size I mentioned in the above post. It is the plain door panel with the perforated area over the speaker rather than two speaker grills. The rear panels also have one speaker each and the panel is perforated over the top of them also. Do you have any idea what size each of those speakers is? Thanks again.

Here's photos of the speaker locations:

I'd say those panels are out of an 83 or earlier car, 84 plus it changed. I have an 83, and finding good speakers was very difficult due to the limited depth behind the panel. The factory speaker does not fit the cut out on the back panel, but no reason not to find a speaker that does fit.

Blaupunkt makes a "thin" thx series of speakers, not very good, but something like 1.5" depth. Lanzar also makes some thin. Small Chevy trucks like the S10 used to require them on the dash I think.

Typically the rubber foam surround on the speak cone is what goes bad, and many speaker repair places will put in new rubber fairly cheaply.
