Engine removal

Gents,

I hit a snag while removing the engine from my 81 928S. I you follow the repair manual, it says to remove the motor mounts and place the engine slowly on the crossmember. Thats all well and fine - if the steering rack has been dropped - which in turn is not part of the jobdescription.

Now, the rest of the job is done, but when it comes to pulling the engine, it turns out, that I canīt pull the engine forward enough to clear the clutch, and therefore end up lifting the entire car with the chirruped.......not good.

Have I missed a point in the instructions?

Tanks gents

I don't have a Manual but an Auto. There was always room front to back just none side to side. Did you remove all in front of the engine? Everything up to my A/C Condenser was removed. Got pics?

Yep, removed it all and never hit a snag. The problem (in my limited min anyway ) is, that the maintenance manual tells you to pull the engine forward slightly prior to pulling the engine. Thats all fine and dandy.....but in order to pull the engine forward, you have to pull the engine up and over the lower crossmember.

I will post pics when I download my camera. Thanks for the snappy reply

to remove the engine you dont have to drop the steering rack/
You do have to remove the clutch from the flywheel it drops down as a package, short shaft, pressure plate and intermediate plate, throw out bearing/guide tube, release arm and clutch discs.
Dont forget to add the wire spacers around the 3 pins that come out the back of the PPlate before you loosen them, so you can remove the release arm.
Once the clutch is out then you remove the bell housing to engine bolts 4 of them 19mm.
Also remove the MM bolts that hold the block to the mount brackets 2X 17mm +2 X 13MM per side

With a floor jack under the front of the TT lift it a bit then lift the engine it should lift up then forward, once the engine is up begin to feed the wire harness out of the firewall

yes you need to remove the clutch...and its a easy job...whole unit comes out in one piece...remove the lower bellhousing with the starter motor....the hardest part may be moving the inter' connecting shaft back...mine was a little rusted and gummed up....John

Good news. Removing the clutch did the trick. Strange however that this is not part of the procedure according to the Porsche Workshop manual. Oh well - its out of the bay as you can see. Now its time for cleaning, renovating, boosting....

Thanks for your help guys

Now the fun begins! Take your time and seal it up right. My engine was out of my car for a few months and I made certain to use Silicone Gaskets where I could and sealed it up with the Red High Temp RTV on top of the normal Gaskets. Not a drop of oil anywhere and I got at least 2K since I put the engine back in.
