I bought Mason's 86.5 Iris

After a couple of moths of working out the details, getting the parts list together and agreeing on the total price with shipping. I finnaly received my 86.5 5sp Limited slip that I bought from Mason of 928 World Wide. I know that there has been some Mason bashing on this forum and him and I even went a round over a comment on the board once but, I am extremely pleased to say that...... This deal went perfect. (as with my previous transaction with him)

This car is awsome. Very solid and extremely fast. I drove another 86.5 (auto) and it was nothing like this car power wise. It has been chipped and has a modified exhaust (sounds like a dream) and a K&N. All I can say power wise is WOW!!! Oh, and I guess I should say that I tested the LSD and it works. lol I do have some interior work to do but Mason has sent me almost all of the parts and I only await a few things. I've already cut the center console for my Double Din Kenwood and I'll be running speaker and amp wires today. I have decided to keep the Black S4 seats that I bought from Kevin Michaels and I'm not real sure what to do with the seats in this car. They sure are nice. Anyone? (they are tan and out of a 911 or something) I'm eventually going Champagne 2 for color inside so I will also have some really nice front black leathers for sale here in a few months. I also got a new carpet kit with the deal. It's black and is for sale since I'm not going black. Mason left the 928 MotorSports strut brace on the car as well. This car also has Porkntensioner installed. The wheels are awsome and the tires are brand new. The car drives very smoothly. Suspension is in great shape and mason already did the steering rack. I'm so pleased.

I do have a few bugs to work out but nothing that wasn't disclosed. The Throw-out bearing feels a little rough. How hard is it to swap?

All in all this car was more than Mason promised. I'm now wondering if the problems people are having with 928 WorldWide are simply growing pains. Thanks Mason for your honesty about this car and your willingness to work with me and my budget. You will be hearing your phone ring next time I need something used.

Oh and by the way Mason, My wife and I love the metal hood and fenders. We are keeping it. Send me the paint code so I can have my guy touch up those couple of spots that got a little messed up. Your not such a bad paint guy after all. I was expecting worse based on your description.

Aww shucks. I'm all flustered Glad you are soooo happy.

It's a mean beast for sure. I have spare paint I will give you.

BUT MOST OF ALL.... THE FACT THAT YOU GUYS LOVE THE POLISH MAKES ME SOOOOO HAPPY. I worked on that for more than 40 hours.... just the strip and polish. What makes me so happy is that I was teased a ton when I did that, most people didn't like it. Now I'm going to build another one! But don't worry, you got the first and it's the star of it's own website

Shame that particular variety hardly ever shows up, although I did find one in '08 and one in '09 so I'm hoping the next barn find 928 we hear about is an 86.5 5 spd lsd, because it's tops in my book.

Enjoy and BEEEEEEEE CAREFUL IN THE WET.

BTW, If those were black sport seats you bought from Kevin Michael they were mine

Thanks for the compliment.

That was attempt #1. I don't think there will ever be a #2, but who knows.... I just can't handle doing what Earl did and painting over and over until it's right. Not enough patience.

If you need good parts described accurately with great service, mason at 928 Worldwide is a great source. If 928 Worldwide was a publicly traded company, I'd but stock.

I drove Iris home on the PA Turnpike from an event in Blue Bell while Mason drove my '84S. What a car! Smooth, fast and great handling. Cruising in 5th at 80 miles per, I dropped it down to third and punched it up to120 in like 2 or 3 seconds and it was hardly breathing hard. Tons of power in that beast! All you need to do is finish the interior and you've got a great weekend warrior. Congrats!!!

I've been running the car all day. It really does drive well. Thanks again Mason.

P.S. He kept the sport seats. Sold me the GTS seats. They are in great shape. Best I've seen that hevn't been redone.

Just got another 86.5 5 spd lsd...... 100k miles.... Meteor with burgundy sport seats! lookout.

I'll put it for sale in March... after it gets the 928ww treatment.

Hope things are good out there Carl and you're enjoying that car- it's a karmic supermarket of ethereal delight.

Bon apetit.

If it's as fast as this thing is when you're done somebody's going to be pretty happy. I can't get over how this thing jumps out of the gate. What all have you done to this thing? I live at 6500 feet and the car still impresses me. I've driven new Cobra's at this altitude that don't pull like this.

That's like asking your grandma to disclose the ingredients in her world famous pasta sauce....

If you're not in the family- FORGET IT!

Well, since you have one of my kids now, I guess you are in the family... the rest of you get a bonus because Carl is such a nice guy:

1.) steam Clean valves and chambers MULTIPLE times with special procedure...using a couple different substances.
2.) run synthetics front and rear
3.) new waterpump and rolllers always make for an improvement in my experience
4.) new plugs
5.) EBAY CHIPS!!!
6.) Cats gone, big difference
7.) Muffler gone, big difference
8.) TIming set using the PORKEN 32v'r..... ESSENTIAL for the 4 cam motor to be nice and timed
9.) New Caps and Rotors
10.) Ditched the air pump and run the smaller belt.
11.) K&N Air Filter- small difference, but a difference still....

The car likes to be run hard, all that stands in the way is usually a suspect belt.... make sure that's cool- and run it hard. It runs better the harder you hit it.

BE SAFE!

Did I mention I have another 86.5 5 spd LSD...

A '85-'86 5-speed with cat delete feels fast, but can be made into a true supercar with PorKen power.

1) If you use good gas, the valves will be clean. The only way to extricate the 1-2mm thick black goop where the injectors don't spray is by removing the intake. The goop extends a few inches up the intake legs. (It's old gas which gels on the walls.)

3.) PorKensioner is the best option.

4.) Run one or two steps cooler. EG. WR6DC(+)

5.) PorKen chips are the only chips available for '85-'86 that actually make a real difference in torque and power. Ebay=Autothority were made in '91, and have stock WOT LH and EZF maps! (They cannot dyno higher than stock.) Ebay=AT chips are modified in the medium load areas, but it is crudely done, and will often ping at part throttle, even with super.

6.) X-pipe and PorKen chips consistently make for 40+rwhp over stock. (300+ ftlb @ 2500 rpm!)

8.) More than four degrees difference between the two banks will really lower the power!

11.) Stock filter filters and flows better over time, and won't damage the MAF.

BTW: to make shifting consistently faster and smoother, a clutch stop works wonders!

I knew the ebay chips comment would make someone reply ...lol... Didn't think it would be you Ken.

The ebay chips seem to make more power- if it's real or not on a dyno I cannot attest. I've used them on two cars now, and I would do it again.

Is it possible that someone selling ebay chips may have the maps right for more power? I mean, couldn't they copy what the current "updated" chipset does???

I sell used parts what works best is best left to guys like Ken.

BTW Ken, your tensioner upgrade is the best thing anyone can do to a 928. Bravo.

All eBay chips are copies of the only set of chips which AutoThority made for '85-'86 in 1991. All of them still have AT copyright text in them.

The ignition chip has some advance added at mid-throttle which makes it feel perkier. (In some places it's 10° over stock, which is too much. That's why they ping.) The fuel chip has a crudely done fuel dump at mid-throttle which is too rich, but is an improvement over stock.

Both the AT ignition and fuel WideOpenThrottle maps are untouched from stock, so as soon as you are >75% throttle, you are back to stock. The stock WOT ignition map is conservative, and the fuel WOT map is way too lean at low rpm for max torque, at high rpm, it is way too rich for maximum HP.

My chips have custom programming, and revised maps for real power. For maximum effect, there is a version which uses a fuel pressure regulator from a '87 S4 (55 psi versus stock 36 psi). But wait, there's more! Not only is there more power, overall the car runs much more smoothly with revised idle control, and compensation for high engine temps.

With the stock/ebay/AT chipset, the car runs great cold, then gets duller and duller as the engine warms. With PorKen chips, it runs well cold, and gets more and more powerful as the engine warms.

Friends don't let friends drive with stale chips!

I wonder if Carl would test the car on a dyno to see how much of a change your set makes... would you loan a set for this purpose? Interesting.

There are dyno sheets on my (website). There will be more this spring.

More info in this (thread).

You can't easily raise the HP peak that much over 300 at the wheels with the S3's smallish valve size, but you can really improve torque, and have much more average hp (under the curve).

Hmmmm, I'm really looking more this direction https://www.928gt.com/c-1407-928-supercharger-kits.aspx. But Mason put your tensioner on the car. I'm really glad he did.

Yeah but he was in a rush to get her back on the road FAST and skipped the seals and the pan gasket DOH!

Good thing Rog supplied them and they're taking up space in my garage.

For a while I used that car everyday for the business, taking packages to post, doing whatever. I did the p'kensioner in my garage in one evening... talk about pain in the calf.... uhhh. Nice to have a real lift finally.

What does it do exactly... I know it's sloppy and too much travel as it is... do you have to change anything?
