household penetrating fluid.
Hi guys,
I was working on my 2003 pontiac Montana the other day and I had a rusted bolt on there that I couldn't get loose, A friend of mine who is in the Canadian Navy stopped by to visit and he said to squirt a couple of dabs of tobasco sauce on it and leave it sit for a bit and then gently tap it with a hammer. I thought he was crazy and none the less I tried it and dollars to donuts it worked. He said that is what they use in the navy all the time because their ships are always on the water and when they get work done on them they bring them on dry dock and they rust pretty bad. They have tried WD-40, wiring brushing, jig a loo, other professional types of pen fluid but nothing beats tobasco sause. Now I keep a bottle in my tool box. I would have to say it is the acid in the tobasco sause that causes the reaction. Just something I thought I would pass along.

Tobasco is pepper in vinegar, and vinegar is an acid.
I tend to try a few standard things, one home brew mix that is very popular is ATF and acetone mixed 50/50. No two rusty bolts exactly the same, but I don't see using hot sauce anytime soon. Are you sure he wasn't pulling your leg? |

I wonder how Tobasco works in the fuel tank as an injector cleaner?

Well, have you tired PB Blaster on your pan cakes or as a topping on your ice cream?? You won't have any "block up or stoppage" problems and your hip and knee replacements will work better!

People frequently use vinegar on rust, but I doubt it has any serious penetrating ability. Two different issues, removing the rust and lubricating the threads.

Rust can expand up to fifty times the volume of steel. If tobasco can penetrate and dissolve some of that rust down, it might be a good trick. It is odd that this is coming up, because I have been thinking about a rust penetrant/dissolver recently, and thinking that it is odd that nobody markets one.

You mean like Wurth Rostof or the classic Mopar products?
