In the middle of the Cap, there should be a spring loaded piece that touches the Rotor. Looks missing in the Pic. Replace both Cap and Rotor. I got a hella deal from Rock Auto. Around $30 shipped for both.

Come to think of it. This is probably your issues with it running right. I was looking at your other posts. This would for sure make it sputter and die.

I removed that spring and contact and put it in another old distributor cap. still problem persists..but i already ordered new cap and rotor. i wish i knew about the rock auto deal, i was happy finding cap and rotor shipped for twice that. STILL what would you rate the wear at? My whole sputtering problem began after installing new bosch plat +2. perhaps this was too much load for old distibutor caps and rotors? I cleaned all contacts even replacing some connectors, just cleaned injector connectors they were a little dirty inside. the engine does respond after sputtering thru 2200-2500 rpm and then accelerates well. ..but lift off the gas and sometimes itll die...the problem seems to always be in low rpm. so hard to tell between spark issues and fuel issues...

Well, I didn't know you could remove that spring. I never removed that piece in any of my Caps, to include any other car than a 928. I would go back to the tried and true Copper Plugs too.

I will leave the answer to this for those that can answer it correctly. I am really unsure of the later cars.

yes, as mentioned piece looks missing from cap.
also, it does not look like the spark is hitting the middle of the open surfaces in the cap - my memory is that I haven't seen it like that, almost like the rotor is too low or the cap is too high, which also supports the issue of the piece and spring coming out of the cap |
