79 928 shift linkage issues
I have a 79 928 with a 5 speed I drove it one day and the next day lost 3 & 5 gear. It seams the shifter dose not travel the distance today. I will in gage 1st but not 3 or 5th. Any one had this issue or the best way to adjust the linkage?? Any pointers on best approach to this?

get under the car and check out the rear shift linkage. Are the bushings FUBAR or are they tight? Should be pretty easy to tell if everything is tight there.
Next, get under the car and check the front ball cup. Pretty hard to see, but if someone else is in the car and shifting the gears, you will probably see the shift rod moving. Follow it to it's end and the front ball cup is located there (providing it's still connected). If it's not, buy the insert, pull out the old insert, and replace. Use a ratchet strap to pull the cup and new insert back onto the ball. Good Luck!

thank you for the info !!! I will give it a shot.. Is the a trick to remove the boot over the linlage?

One time use on the boot. Lube the inside, but keep the outside dry so you can grip it. Just wiggle it off and when done wiggle it on. That's the worst part of the whole deal is jacking with the boot.

I didn't know it was possible to replace just the plastic insert in the forward shift socket. Does the same apply to '84 model cars? If so, where do you get it, mine needs replacing and I have been hesitant to spend $75 on an entire new socket.
