Jager Speed Mount - Installed

I ordered a Speedmount from garage9.com a few days ago. I did this after my brother installed one on his 944 N/a-5 speed. No more grumble grumble when drives. Convinced, and persuaded by how easily he says the install was I ordered.

It arrived quickly, and I was not really impressed. Its a slab of silicone/rubber that at first glance seems to be 'something I could have made with a saw in under 5 minutes'. THen I looked more closely at it. It has distinct top and bottom contours, which will be important later. It was pretty hefty, but I still had my doubts.

With a cold water in hand, out I went into the morning stillness to work on Dunkel.

I had the car on jack stands, and with a nice 6x6x2 piece of wood under the oil pan, jacked the motor up about 2 inches. After scooting under I could see why it had the specific contour, which matched the contour between the oil pan and x-Member.
It literally took me longer to jack the car up than it did to slip the Jagermount into place.

Still, other than the 'oil cap' and motor being higher, I really didnt notice too much different. Then I started the car. My Motor moved! I have never seen the motor rock. Test drive is in order (coffee). I get in the car, drop it in gear ....My evil drivetrain clunk was gone. Hmmm.. Im liking this. Driving along I suddenly notice my car is much smoother, and the easy bake oven effect from the center console and footwell is gone. WOW! I had read fixing the Motormounts helped fix the heat problem.

Disclaimer-

This is intended as a temporary fix until the motor mounts are replaced, but If you are living with collapsed mounts, especially if you have a 5 speed car (I have an automatic) you will notice immediate improvements.

YMMV but I give this product a A for effectiveness and ease of installation.

Jager Engineering is at www.garage9.com

if your going to spend time jacking up the car why not just replace the mounts and be done with it?
Also consider that the oil pan is now in a compressed state ,...
as such it can possibly damage or over compress the OPG

Oh if replacing the motor mounts were so simple and cheap to do.

That product has been around for about a decade. Don't recall ever hearing of anyone having a problem caused by it.

Je,
There may not have been direct problems with the speedmount, but jacking on the pan to install could definitely compress the pan gasket. Also, I dunno what the speedmount costs but the permanent solution (new aftermarket motor mounts) are about $100.

Nice to know the cost has come down if that really is the current cost. Last time I checked people were exploring the possibility of using a FORD mount. It's still a PITA to replace them. It's only a temporary fix anyway. I had one installed in one of my 83s and that pan was dry as a bone while it was on. I had no problems. Never heard of one. This question was argued to death on the old Rennlist Mail List in 1999-2000.

Good feedback on the use and cautions of the speedmount. Thanks, didn't know about them.

Today's replacement of choice is the mount set from a V8 Volvo.

The Ford / Anchor / Corteco solid mounts are manufactured now by a cost-cutting group that reduced the amount of rubber in them by 20 to 30%, causing them to sink.
Out of 5 sets, one has sunk for me. I have the Volvo mounts but need to allocate a day to replace them.

So Dcrasta, you've seen firsthand the improvement with elevating the engine. What is stopping you from doing the mounts and pan gasket? Allocation of time and space? When you do them, time spent cleaning before wrenching pays dividends. Messy damn job.

Ideally we'd somehow get yours and maleficios cars side by side and attack them both.

FWIW....Just had solid rubber mounts from 928 Motorsports installed on my '88. Cost for the parts was $106.00 and I'm very happy with the performance.

Hopefully he switched away from that supply chain and sold you something else. Keep an eye on them. The batches in question started showing up late last year. Apparently when contacted the India manufacturer of Ford/anchor/corteco refused to entertain criticism.

I would have loved to have done the Motormounts, but I was in there to do the Starter (which actually turned out to be a defective ignition switch). It was more of a While I was At it move, and I had the speedmount after I met Landseer and he told me my MMs were collapsed (good eye on that).

I plan on replacing the MMs asap, but the job is a bit intimitating (considering I only have jackstands to work with..) Believe me, its on the list of things to do once I get the mounts, and get the downtime for the car.

Just trying to share my impressions. I did google the jagermount and didnt find anything negative.

As far as getting Our cars side by side, I would love too! Im always up for wrenching on dunkel, just need a better spot to do so. My garage that I rent is a bit dark and Im limited to daytime use. Working on getting access to a better spot but that will take some time

Thanks for all the feedback tho..

Owning a 928 is risky business - but sometimes you just gotta say "what the fudge".
