Smog pump is making hellacious noise!
I forgot to look if the pump belt drives anything else. If not, gonna cut the belt and forget about it.
 |
The smog pump is the tensioner for your mechanical radiator fan. You can replace the front bearing in the smog pump, but I couldn't find one for the rear of it. 928 specialists makes a very nice dual electric fan. It replaces both stock fans. Easy install, but pricey. but your motor is turning a lot less (no smog pump or fan) and in my case removed 4 noisy bearings from the equations.

You will want to drive the fan.
Its possible to use a short belt from some kind of lawnmower on it. Search on rennlist for it. I know its there somewhere. Its in here. 21" belt or so? http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/928-forum/288540-smog-pump-removal-2.html No adjustment, but you should be able to loosten the bolts holding the fan bracket and fit it on, then tighten back to get enough tension to turn it. |
The fact that the car won't warm up has nothing to do with that fan, sounds like you need a new thermostat. As landseer said you'll want to turn that fan, to ensure you have enough cooling, but obviously it's pretty cool where you are so I don't think overheating will be an issue as long as the electric fan is still working, just in case you stop for an expended period of time. I doesn't matter how cold it is, if there is no airflow through the radiator it will over heat eventually

Thanks, guys. I won't cut it unless I absolutely have to.

Short Fan Belt -
Hey Maleficio, Like everyone has indicated, the belt that drives the smog pump is also routed around the crankshaft and the mechanical fan drive pulley. If you simply remove this belt, you will also now fail to turn the engine driven radiator cooling fan. Many 928 owners have eliminated the smog pump by installing a short 21inch by half inch belt around only the crank and fan pulley. I personally prefer the thicker fan belts from Tractor Supply. They are more of a heavy duty unit which keeps the belt nice and tight for years.
In order to install the shorter belt, you must remove the fan mounting arm. After the belt is around the crank and fan pulley, reinstall the three bolts that holds the fan mounting arm to the engine. Note : Although there is no longer any tension adjustment - this arrangement has worked well for many owners. Good Luck, Michael :) |
Thanx, JK. :)

Only monkey wrench would be the unlikely situation if your car has the optional smaller fan pulley, M319, in which case you would need to iterate to a slightly different belt size.
On your no heat situation, I have that happening now and i think its in the HVAC controls somewhere. Not sure if its the sliders or the electrical actuation box above drivers knee. |
Is there no heat or will the engine not come up to operating temp ?
|
The intake is cool to the touch after a fifty mile run.
|
I do get some heat now that I completely filled up the coolant tank. I think the block and the heater core were fighting over the little bit of coolant available.
But I really don't think the engine ever comes up to temp. Gas mileage has dropped off big time, too. |
The smog pump just seized. I cut the belt, plus the AC belt, too. It doesn't work anyway.
The car is more responsive now. I can see why people delete the pump. The temp rises at stop lights, cools off underway. I guess my thermostat is seized open. Will replace Monday. |
Thanx for the help, guys.
|
Hopefully the thermostat fixes it. ( I can't see any other thing that would keep it cool) May help your gas mileage too if the car was staying in "choked" mode because it never warmed up. The only thing my motor is spinning is the alternator and PS pump.. I like it. If you don't want to use the "short belt trick" to turn the fan you can take apart you smog pump and gut it, replace the front bearng and lube the rear one .. You'll probably be okay. I have one that I did that to.. If you want to buy it I'll see if I can find it.
|
Thanx, Pete. I'll prolly just install the short belt and be done with it.
|
I'd do that too :) If your fan is making noise, there are 2 very common and easy to change bearings in it too.

I think the fan is in good shape.
That dual-electric fan looks interesting, but I wonder if my alt can handle the extra load. I see it only operates below 45 mph. |
I asked about the load. It pulls a bit more at start up but less when they are running (than stock). Personally i love it. It's MUCH quieter than the factory fan too. It's a dual stage fan. You change the sensor in the radiator and at one temp one fan kicks in, if it keeps going up the second kicks in. I honestly don't even know if my second fan works or not, The first stage brings it right down, the second stage has never had to kick in, even in the summer I have a 85 4.7 Euro in my car too. I have the smallest alt being that it's a 79 and I'm fine. I don't know what you mean by it only operates below 45.. there's no speed sensor to it. If your moving that fast you shouldn't need it anyhow... It has flaps that open in the housing to allow even more air through... maybe those need 45mph to be pushed open.. I don't know
