Almost Done!
It feels good to be posting back up on the Pelican.... its been over a year since i have been in possession of my baby. Anyways, the car is primer'd and in the process of being sanded. I decided to go with Iris Blue Pearl (39V). I was told that i should have the car back withing a few days. here are some pics of it with speckled primer on it as of today:
Notice how its trimless [sic].... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Twinkel Toes Blue -
Hey ElPtuningR32, The prep work looks good. It is amazing how much labor is involved in getting a car ready for paint while the actual process of laying down the color coat takes only a comparative few minutes.
While I was preparing to paint one of my first 928’s a retired Porsche mechanic told me that the only true color for a Porsche was Red, Black, Silver or White. I later told him that I had selected a “Twinkle Toes Blue” for Betty Sue..... just to see him chomp off the end of his cigar. You might make sure the painter pays careful attention while covering the area around the base of the headlights and the standoff arms under both side mirrors. These surfaces are very difficult to get an even coverage of paint while still on the car. Also make sure they take the extra time to shield your wheels properly from any hint of over spray. The large black plastic trash bags work perfect when pulled down and taped securely over the tires. The Iris Blue Pearl you selected should look really nice with those wheels. Good Luck, Michael

I guess the point I was making is that if the color isn't close then you'll see the other color when you open doors, etc. When I painted my Red car Primered Black, you could really see the red (inside the fenders) when you open the doors. It was impossible to get some black primer in there. No worries in your situation.

The headlight covers come off real easy with 3 screws...just a suggestion. wow.. the front of your car is low. It should look great all painted up.

I actually love the primer look on it! It's the Rat Patrol car (anyone here old enough to remember that show?)
Can't wait to see more pics.

So...they aren't removing the mirrors, the headlights, the bumper covers or the rear spoiler? What a waste of time. You've waited this long to get it painted and they are going to half ass it? BTW, that primer shouldn't be multi colored like that. It needs to be a uniform color and smooth.
I'm glad to hear that your going to have a 928 to drive soon. I just want you to be happy with the result.

I agree on the dismantling of certain parts such as mirrors and lenses . the multi coloring that you are seeing is a guide coat for sanding.

You will never want to take it to a high pressure car wash after that masking paint job.

I just noticed that they didn't even take off the rubber grommet around the hatch lock. That is laziness at its worst. That rubber takes 15 seconds to remove.

as for everyone addressing the quality of the shops tear down methods.....................yeah.. its pretty bad... BUT, i have seen the work that they do, and from what i have seen.. they are pretty good at being lazy because the paint jobs that come out of here are some of the nicest..... we shall see. just because it has been a long time since i have had the car doesnt mean i am going to take it back just because its got some paint on it.... i am a very picky person and they will have to deal with me looking under the car for clear runs and gapping and dirt and condensated breathe spots.

We should reserve judgement until the finished product. But having said that. Are they painting the gasket bead between the bumpers and body? That's going to look like poop. Bumpers must be removed and rebeaded IMHO.

Not to throw more on this; but, adding to the already mentioned...
If you take it off after painting and replace there may be noticeable changes in how the new one covers the old paint...

Nah, that won't work. Once it's painted, then you'll remove some of the paint when taking the bead off. They haven't painted yet, so get in there and tell them to mask it off.

-take a few hours and remove the front and rear bumper covers then remove the black beading,
also remove the mirror gaskets and the hatch rubber grommet, these few things will result in the car being worth about 2K more when it comes time to sell if the paint work is as good as you say otherwise it will just look shabby
