Nature of the 10-speaker audio system?

I'm about to replace the after marked Kenwood head unit that was mounted in my newly acquired 1989 GT, and I have a few questions about the 928 audio system

Which head unit was mounted originally?

Is there an amplifier located somewhere, or is the head unit driving all the speakers directly? How about crossover filters?

I have an 86 928S. My car had the amp mounted next to the passenger seat on the side in a pod. There are cross overs on the speakers, at least on mine. There was a balance control next to the drivers seat. If I remember, all speaker wires went to the amp next to passenger seat. My original radio was not worth fixing so I installed a new JVC with touch screen. Single DIN. I replaced the speakers as well. I did away with the balance control and let the radio do it. I left the Blaupunkt amp in place just disconnected it.
