How many miles do you have on your 928?

My 1983 is about to turn over 160,000 and it runs as well today as I suspect it did when it was new. The smog testing on the car after tune up showed virtually no pollution whatsoever and I was quite amazed. Well there was "some" reading on the test so the test equiment was not broken, but the 30 year old bruiser was just about off the charts with barely a reading at all.

The high silicon aluminum blocks have a reputation for being basically indestructible, but how long do the pistons last?

Here is a good one for you, a friend who owned a 928 S4 had 268,000 miles on his car, he lead a Porsche rally event one day and I was the next car to follow and I never saw the first puff of smoke out the tail pipes. He then took it to the drag strip to see how it performed, and it did well, and then he sold it to another guy who continues to drive it today.

Regards,

Paul

Mine is an '86 with 87K miles on it.

I know a guy who has a '79 that he bought when it was new and it has over 350K miles on it.

83 is about 170k, the 81 Euro, who knows, I replaced the gear and it worked for about 1,000 miles, it's stuck on around 101K

Owning a 928 is risky business - but sometimes you just gotta say "what the fudge".

My GTS has 206K miles on it.
My '89 has 130K miles
My '84 Euro AT (the Stepson) has 167K miles.
My '84 Euro (the Schwartz) has 57K miles
and the Jalapeno has 47K miles.

What kills these cars is extended periods of non-activity. The antifreeze eats the head gaskets, the fuel pumps gunk up and seize, etc.

These cars love to be driven!!!

Two are documented original at 102K and 85K.

Three, all 84's, are technically unknown.
One shows 97K + estimated 25K by me, another shows 139K + estimated 15K by my daughter, and one has an estimated 201K

I have a 944 that shows 197K and son has put at least 40K on it.

I need to go on a 750 mile drive soon and will either drive the Euro or the 944.

153,000. I bought it with 83,000 miles 12 years ago, and I've been harassing Porsche website owners since 2002. Randy Venier still loves me, I'm sure-

I do a heckuva lot of driving, but unfortunately, I didn't put most of these miles on my 928's.(Trailblazer as DD) I do, however, have my pick every day of which one to drive (except for the Schwartz for now as it has a bad head gasket).

I really have 2 too many 928s. Knowing that they love to be driven, I think that 3 is the optimum number. Obviously I will keep the GTS (a brute). My wife likes and drives the '89 (very fast, but somewhat refined and manageable), and I really do love the '84 Euros (blazingly and scary fast above 3500 RPM and more nimble than the aforementioned models). Just my $.02.

My '82 has 148k but that is where it has been stuck for the last 5 years. Should really fix that speedo problem.

My '88 shows 168k, but the odo was broken for about 3 years so I'm betting it has close to 200k.
The '90 had 166k when I sold it two years ago, it's still going strong.

Have a few around here with 400k plus on them, original engines.

I think I'm seeing a theme here.... 928's are prone to having bad odometers?

Nope, just a self imploding gear. They turn into dust, literally. replace it and your good to go, unless they have other underlying issues too. The cost is about $25 with instructions too.
