Are you talking about this one that "looks" brown? Probably was Red like Riber says. Anyways, I can't remember if this is the one that travels down to the Starter. If so, I would just replace it with a similar gauge wire. Just run it next to the Harness.

I actually linked another posts pic. Can you trace where it goes? The "brown" wire. I know Neil knows.

George, that wire is the main feed from the back of the alternator to the post. You can replace it completely with a new 4gauge ( IIRC) wire, but it must be a high temp wire as it runs over the hot engine block.

As Neil stated, that is the main lead to the alt. and it runs through the main wiring harness across the front of the motor. While you are there, you may want to pop the top off the 17 pin connector and take a look at their condition. If that heavy main wire is pretty bad, then I bet that the smaller main leads from the pins at the connector are worse or not too far behind.

If your harness is toast, I have a spare one from an '84 Euro S that I could sell.

Not sure a 84 euro harness will work - and the connector on a 82 is 14 pin, btw.

I was at my garage today, and snapped a few pictures of my 14-pin connector and jump post.. Don't know if you can use them, but here you go:

And, just for kicks, some pics of my teeny-tiny garage, where my car (and I sometimes) spend those long lonely winter nights... That's what you get for living in the city :/

jumper post update

i cleaned my brown wire which goes to the alternator from hot post about 8 inches
from hot post and that made a lot difference to my gage, before only showed about
between 10 and 11 on the gage, after cleaning it reads bettween 12 and almost 13. all i did was used battery head cleaner foam spray and washed it with water.
Ed.

Interesting, but corrosion does damage to metal which is your wire. Why trust it, just run a new one from 14 Pin to your Alt. It's a relatively short run.

Hi Leo, the wire starts from hot post to alternator, i will do that once i move to my
new house with 3 garages and RV parking, now i live in a condo and have no
place to work on it, i still have to clean my 14 pin wires and my CE panel. by the way, the red wire on left side of hot post looking at the picture, where does it go or hooked to. Ed.

My spare for sale is actually a 14 pin. Not sure why I was thinking 17 pin? Here are pics.
