Help with a trans number

I picked up a trans today and the person that I picked it up from thought it was a 3 speed. From the look of the trans and the number on it i think it is a 4 speed LSD. Here is the number 722 270 12 01 722 316 02 298711. I really need a 3 speed as mine is toast. So if any one would want to do a swap of some sort let me know.

Just a standard 4 speed from an 83 US. I still need a 3 speed trans. Time to hunt one down.

It makes a bad clanking sound and will not pump any fluid. I had a bad knocking sound coming from the trans area a few weeks ago. Thought it was a bearing in the TT or TC you know how the sound travels back there. I loosened up the TT clamps(tightened the front clamp it was very loose) and re torqued them I also checked the TC flexplate it was tight. Soon after that the noise stopped. So I did a filter and fluid change and now it wont take more then about 3 quarts of fluid and makes that knocking sound again.

Bummer you weren't closer to San Diego. I'm about to do the 3 to 4 speed swap in mine. My 3 speed works fine but blew a seal when my throttle got stuck. Not sure which one but don't really care since I won't be rebuilding it. It used to leak at the front pump seal a little, so I think this is the one that blew out.

I was wondering how difficult it is to remove and change out the trans pump. I havent dove into an auto that far but having one sitting there already pulled is very tempting.

Drop the Trans. That's about how difficult it will be. You have to do it anyways. From there its just some bolts and getting the right seals/pump. But sounds like yours is more than just a pump.
