78 Engine Mystery Part

I am a 944 owner who has been asked by a 928 friend to help him identify a mystery part on his engine. He is in the process of assembling his rebuilt 1978 engine.

He cannot find where the part in the picture goes on the engine. He remembers taking it off because the male fitting was frozen to the tubing and he had to remove other parts to get it to rotate. He does not remember breaking the tubing but it is now broken. We have searched the PET and cannot locate it. A Porsche mechanic friend of mine cannot identify it.

It is the same diameter as the mechanical fuel injection lines. The end opposite the male fitting has a straight cut off and looks like a vacuum line should go on it.

I can't think of any tubing that size w/o a fitting on both ends, on a 78.

Are both WUR lines present?

If it help, looking at the break the orientation of the right piece I think should be flipped maybe?

Pict of the whole line with the break matched might help.

Closer pict of the end fittings too.

Could it be a BRAKE part?

air injection

Looks like an air injection fitting for the exhaust. On my '85, the air injectors screw into the exhaust around where the manifold joins the down-pipes. These threaded holes would probably be hidden from view as they are on the top of the exhaust pipes.

Not 100% sure where the other end plugs into but I'll check this evening.

In the meantime, this might help; Porsche 928 Parts

Could be the line that runs from the top of the fuel distributor to the WUR? See photo below (not my pic, just something I came across on google images).

Thanks for the replies but the fuel injection line that has the male end and runs under the intake manifold is in place. There are no holes on the fuel distributor that do not have a line attached.

The end of the tubing is at the end of the picture. My phone cut off about a 1/4". That tubing end is a straight cut. Looks like it should have vacuum line on it.

Okay...what SIZE is the tube? IF a hard vac ( which I do not think it is ) line the tube will be very small. This looks more like a hydraulic line...maybe steering ??

Also the break looks from the photo that it matches better if the fitted end was rotated 180 and forms a Z and NOT a U. Is that possible?

What size nut is the fitting?

I am outside looking at my brothers 78 now.

Some or most STOCK hydraulic hoses will have fittings on both ends of hard lines...BUT its not uncommon to see an end cut off to replace a soft section with hose and clamps...instead of spending big bucks on factory replacment lines. This may be the case here.

If the line section is 1/4" or so outside diameter I would discount it being a vac as I dont THINK there were any hard vac lines that large. ?? I would look at steering or brakes next. Just my opinion.

The tubing is the same size as the fuel injection lines. The male fitting is the same size as the one that is in the top of the fuel distributor.

The brake lines are all a larger diameter than the mystery line.

Yes, it looks like the break in the tubing should make it rotate 90 degrees.

Looks like a brake line style fitting to me rather than fuel. Is it part of the clutch line?
