Santa Ana Calif non S Euro, sad

There has been an 82 Euro on CL for the last couple months at a small local dealer, today I had a chance to look it over.

parting out 1982 Porsche 928 5 speed V8 lots of new and good parts

Good
Its an 82 Euro, runs, 5 spd, new brakes and a few other bits, and the seller wants it gone. It has a BAR tag, so it was registered in Calif and could be again.

Bad
Seller is into it for repairs made, when owner handed him the pink and walked. Seller wants $1700, and DMV wants $900 in back fees for last 10 years or so. CI$ will take some $$$ to pass smog, paint has clear peeled all over and base pretty oxidized. Interior upholstery work is vinyl and not very appealing. Hate to say it, but its a parts car and the seller thinks a junkyard will give him $650 AFTER he sells some parts.

Lots of picts on my ancient cell, but no cooperation with either of my PC's and the two types of data cables I have getting anything off the phone, Nokia 3200.

The seats can easily be switched out with other seats or just buying a leather kit will do much more justice. Paint can always come last after engine repairs and everything else. If you know of good places you can get a paint job for cheap (I know a place that can get your car painted for sub $2000, but I know them personally)

I thought the v16 models is more efficient with smog than the v32 models? (after some tuneup).

this car has been for sale forever. I looked at it and made him an offer but he's holding out for more. I certainly won't pay $650 for it once it's been picked over.

Owning a 928 is risky business - but sometimes you just gotta say "what the fudge".

Mark, I figured you knew about it, but told him he should call you.

Seller is still in denial, he put hard dollars into repairs and thinks he can get them back out, but $900 in DMV tells me this car will not get registered in Calif.

Seller was saying $400 at Maaco and it looks like new, my answer is the same for that or a $2k paint job, it will add ZERO value to any knowledgeable Porsche buyer. Cheap paint is at the heart of all future parts donor cars. The issue is quality, which will be substantially below factory, and money, its cheaper to buy a car with good original paint.

Oh and BAR is the
Bar Area Racing Team, meaning that car has been arround oakland, and other illegal racing places in Calif... Kinda scary, then again i was doing it last night not a bad thing.I would love to see a classic porshe at one event though.

Yea, Your going have to know people for good paint. (I feel it isnt too bad, the areas that need paint is the easier parts ie the hood, fender and bumper... the top is the hard part)

But yea the seller is in denial 1700 is too high, bad paint, past due DMV, a dent on the fender and it looks like damaged bumper.

If it was upkept with DMV then 1700 might be ok.

Can you educate me what this means? Not familar with this practice where I live. Does this mean DMV wants $900 before you can reregister it?

Calif doesn't forgive unpaid registration, so yes all back reg fees and penalties, AND it has to pass smog inspection. It might be possible to register it outside of Calif, then bring it back and skip fees, but you need a friendly state that is ok with stiffing Calif.

To the people thinking these money pits are dandy, haven't you seen any of the really very nice cars selling lately? They are rare, and they often sell fast or are not easy to find, but comparing this one to the 928 Leo bought for $900, he is maybe $5k ahead, maybe more.

BAR is Bureau of Automotive Repair, specifically a referee smog station inspected and agreed it complied with CA emissions standards. Not really possible after the late 80's, but if you have it, its good forever.

Hey Mike, the penalty fees part is really how much you smooze the DMV Clerk (I pleaded all my penalty fees waived on my Jet Ski/Trailer last month). It's the back Reg Fees that can't be waived. The $900 928 is still going strong too. It's really a right place right time thing for me. The car was literally about 6 miles from my house.

Thanks for the clarification. Glad we don't have any such thing here. All we worry about is out of province inspection - and that is only required when bringing the car in to the province for the first time - even that is to make sure the car is safe, and not a salvage. No emissions testing required.

Does anyone know whether this is a 300hp car or not? Here in Nevada, Cali fees don't matter, and in my neck 'O the woods, we don't smog.

If it was a 300 HP Euro S it would not still be sitting on that lot, but it occurs to me that not being an S isn't that big of a deal. It has a BAR tag, so it should have no special issues once running correctly in passing Cal smog inspection, even if the engine were swapped for a Euro S or Euro hybrid.
