Front Strut removal

My shocks were junk, so I bought some replacements from hour host.

I found this on rennlist:
Easier way for front strut removal on 85 - Rennlist Discussion Forums

Wouldn't removing the lower control arm mean I'd have to get an alignment? Besides it was done on an S4, not sure if it will work on my 84.

Right now I have it apart and I was trying to see if I could slide the strut out but no luck. The WSM suggests to remove the upper control arm. I've had it bathing in PBBlaster for the last 24 hours and It's not looking promising.

Anyone have any alternate methods for removing a front strut?

I was hoping to bang it out this weekend.

Thanks
-Dan

I have had my front shocks out recently, 1982 model,
I found it quite easy to undo the two nuts either side in the engine bay that hold the UPPER arm, 3 nuts on top of the tower, bolt through the eye of the strut to the lower arm, pull the upper arm out into the wheel well , leave it connected to the hub, with a little juggling strut drops down and out.easy.

Dan,
I've replaced shocks on quite a few 928s and have always removed the lower control arm. (I just replaced all four shocks on a friend's '85 last Thursday) Unless you change the ride height, the suspension will bolt right back in the same position, so no re-alignment is necessary. On '86 and older models, it is necessary to unbolt the suspension and raise the A arm to just above horizontal and "screw" the coils of the spring through the A arm from the bottom. At least, that's the way I do it.

I could not for the life of me remove the bolts holding the lower control arm. I used a spring compressor from HF and it still had to come out un-pretty. The best way is what stepson did.
