rear spoiler removal
I am looking at "backdating" a 1985 by picking up a set of phone dial wheels and removing the rear spoiler. Has anyone ever done this and do you know how the spoiler is attached ie. glue or screws? also pictures of newer 1984+ with phone dials also requested. Thanks -Mark

Keep in mind the phone dials were 7" at the widest I think.
Are you planning no spoiler or S type spoiler? No idea how they come off, except part of it is hard to remove from the glass, but otherwise people play with spoiler swaps from time to time, but I don't recall a backwards move. Porsche did have a spoiler delete option for a few years.

The car is a s model and I am looking to remove all the spoilers. The flat disk wheels on the 1985 which I am looking at are also 16X7.

The S4 version of the flat disk, has 8" on the rear, thats what I am thinking of if I find some I like before I find some 17" I like better.
Phone dials have a unique look, plain or painted.

the S spoiler is attached with numerous screws, no glue. removal requires removing the interior upholstery, but not removal of glass. once you remove the upholstery, you will see numerous attaching screws. remove these and the spoiler comes right off. you will need non-spoiler window trim because that too, is different.
the side pieces (sometimes called wings) are also attached by screws, with brackets that are bolted underneath the glass weatherstripping. if you are removing these, you'll need to get quarter glass pieces and weatherstripping that were on an earlier (non-S) model, as they are different. phone dials came in 15 and 16 inch diameters, and several widths. if you are using 4-piston Brembo brakes (S4, GT, and GTS) you may have caliper to wheel clearance problems. early single piston brakes do not have this clearance issue. the front spoiler removal is another problem. the front facia (front bumper cover) is also different, in addition to the front fender and brake air ducting differences. this is quite an undertaking, as most folks go the other direction, installing later model parts on early cars (mine is a good example of this). I question your motives for doing this, as it is much easier to buy an earlier version instead of converting a newer one to early standards?

The main reason is a good deal on a 1985 928S. Why not buy an older one? 32 valve, 288HP!! I guess I will either keep looking or settle for the wheel only change. Thanks for the how-to on the spoiler removal. -Mark

If you are lucky enough to find a "good deal" on a 928, buy it, wash it and detail it, drive it, and sell it at a nice profit.

Heh heh, only if you found phone dials in a 22" wheel, the phone dials are going to look SMALL with a lot of tire around them.

It would handle better with wider rear tires. There is a set of S4 wheels for sale on a post over at rennlist, also some 17'' twists. The S4s come with tires 500.00.

BTW, those spoilers have been on 928s since 1980, so no conflict with the backdate.

you didn't say it was a 86.5 (to start with).
if you wanted to get the early look, it's your ride, no offense taken...... rear spoiler removal is no big deal, just like I said above. front spoiler is a different matter. phone dials (as I recall---and I'm tired from an 800 mile day yesterday) come in 16's, but won't fill the wheelwells no matter how big of a tire you put on them. you can do like M21sniper did on his, and use a very large wheel spacer to move the tire/wheel out towards the fender lip, even so far as to need to roll the fender lips.-----something a ricer/tuner kid would do---- you've got a nice looking ride as it is---- why change it.....sorry, I forgot---something different. Like I said, I'm tired. Good luck----- Let's see...wider rear tires. How about 315/25/19???

OK so the 20"phone dials are out I like the idea of the wider back wheels. I will post more when I pick up the car.
these are the wheels on it now.

I see why you want to get rid of your wheels. Those are pretty loud- too much red on your car. Somebody probably likes them so if they are in good shape they could be sold to pay for your new wheels. I also think your car would look better if those red wheels were painted or powder coated black in the center. I also see that your car has no front spoiler already. I would leave the rear spoiler in place. I sounds like a pain to remove and I personally think 928's look funny without it. Since you front spoiler is gone, do you have the brake cooling ducts in the front bumper cover still? If you want to go retro a little bit, just get the 16" phone dials. - then you'll look like tom cruise in risky business. the flat 16X7's are what belong on your car.

If you reall wanted a different look, try having a set of Lindseys built to the correct offset and 17 inch diameters with about an 11 inch width rear and 8-10 width for the front......
That would be different.

Resurrecting an old thread.
Is there any holes or fasteners visible when you remove the S type spoiler?

Rear spoiler yes, the quarter window trim is different, and holes for the main part.

I doubt the car will roll very well with square tires. There was someone making PD's in an 18", but we're quite pricey. Understandably so as it was custom and not many made.

This will work better with round tires.
