Timing belt advise (yawn)
I should do a belt change this year, it's been under 30K miles but has been several years. I remember seeing a"racing" type belt available somewhere. Has anyone used this? What are the pros and cons? If it lasted longer (chronologically) that would be great.

I have one on my 89. The racing belt does not stretch as much as the regular Gates belt. It is NOT Kevlar impregnated contrary to popular belief. It is supposed to offer longer life, but I don't have enough miles on mine to confirm that.

Racing belt is much stronger, what do you suppose will break when it doesn't?

I'm not sure. but it's a M28/21 motor so if ANYTHING breaks I'm f-ed.

lol, This is true and in the past I welcome those opportunities but I don't even really want the car anymore. The last thing I want to do is spend a lot "upgrade" of money on it. I'm in a holding pattern with it

I usually stay away from any "racing" upgrades. I used the stock Gates TB and it's been fine for 4 years and maybe 35K miles. Sometimes what is good for racing is not good for normal use.

Pete, I'd just stick with the regular Gates belt.

yeah, I think I will. Why mess with what's working. So the Gates one is the best? Is it any different than the continental or Porsche/OE one?

I've had problems with the Conti belt stretching and giving me false timing belt warnings. I was never able to get the warnings under control until I switched to Gates. Others have had no problems at all. I believe Gates makes OEM Porsche belts. In that case, you're just paying for Porsche name to be on it.

Unless you're racing the 928 or have a modified high horsepower motor, there is no need to go to a racing belt. Just stick to the Gates or OEM belt and check and re-tension after 1500 miles as the factory manual suggests.

Ive been using the conti OEM belt for over 30 years now, racing over 200 hours , and never had an issue. im in the camp that feels that the overtightning or too stiff a belt, can be a wear problem for the pulleys go stock.. should be fine.. check periodically.

If you aren't going to keep it, make it look nice but don't waste your money on big repairs it will not translate into a higher selling price.
