Steering wheel won't unlock sometimes
The steering wheel is difficult to unlock sometimes, and the car sometimes cranks but does not start. I had replaced the ignition switch, the part in the back but does this mean the front part where the key goes needs to be replaced?

Does anyone know if this article is accurate? I don't want to drill a hole in a new part.

So I decided I'm not going to drill through a new part or drill out 2 bolts. I don't have a drill press to drill that accurate of a hole. What a lousy design, leave it to the Germans to make it impossible to work on a car.
A friend recommended just installing a push button switch to bypass the entire ignition assembly. So I found the wiring harness wire colors on this site. I bought a $20 switch and mounted it in one of the spare spots on the dash left of the steering wheel. They I spliced the alligator clips into the wiring harness and the car won't start. The diagram says the starter is red/black stripe and the 12v always on is black/yellow stripe. Anyone know if these wire colors are correct? It starts right up if I run a jumper from the connector on the firewall with the same red/black stripe wire to the battery. |
