Water pump question
I am in the process of doing the belts, pulleys rollers etc. I am also doing the water pump and thermostats.
I am wondering if it makes sense to replace the studs with new ones they are groddy, or let sleeping Maddogs lie? Secondarily how about replacing all the fasteners in the pump to engine block with studs to prevent a possibility of thread striping in the future? Thanks Sox

I WOULD REPLACE any of the studs that you dont think are structural. general rule of thumb for cars i do this work on. If any studs break replace all of them, new bolts unless previously looked newer.
oem studs arent that pricey. i wouldnt swap to only studs. |

So I should have let sleeping Maddogs lie...
![]() The first stud I tried to take out, after overnight soak in PB blaster and heating with a propane torch snapped below the surface. ![]() Had to drill it out barf. Made a jig and got it drilled out. ![]() Stuffed the holes to make sure fillings did not get in the system. ![]() Tapped it and inserted a helicoil. ![]() ![]() Screwed in a threaded steel rod, and cleaned the other studs (not touching them). ![]() In the process of doing this, I broke thru the back of the hole...So when I put it together and pressurized it the pump leaked at that screw. So I took the rod out and put a flange bolt with a gasket in there. seem to hold, no leaks for 24 hours with 10 psi in the system. Fingers crossed. ![]() Moral of the story, if it aint broke leave it alone. Have put in new belts, rollers, sporkets. done the tension settings, all that stuff. Putting it back together. Any one want a water pump as a core return ? it works. Sox

oh man, sorry i saw this too late. i would have advised to leave those alone as they can snap during removal but i guess you also learned the hard way.
