hoping to finish the AC delete today. yesterday had to reseat the drivers window in my 911, came off the rail.

when I get the 951 back together and refreshed for the next DE, then install the AC compressor in the 87 944S.

if I can ever get these little items done I really want to spend time on my 930 conversion project. I have been doing some work on cleaning/rebuilding some suspension components. need to update that thread too.

and then there is the 928 project, prep for full repaint.

and I thought when I retired I would have enough time for all of this. wife is getting frustrated I am not helping enough with yard/house projects.

got the AC delete done and preped the 951 for next DE, this coming weekend at Nelson Ledges. 944Fest.

got the AC compressor replaced in the 944S, now blowing nice and cold.

got the window fixed on the 911.

did just a little more work on suspension parts for the 930, and got a package of wheels bearings and turbo tie rods.

then finally put the insulation and paneling on the ceiling of the trailer and painted the wood sides. turned out pretty nice.

and got the 951 loaded, ready to leave in the morning for 944Fest.

and in between all of that, even got some project done for the wife.

well... had a great time on Fri at the 944fest. at the end of the last session my clutch developed a problem. feel pressure when pushing in pedal but clutch does not disengage. wont know until I pull it. not a job I am looking forward to. did that when building the car. installed all new spec PP, clutch, alum flywheel, TO and pilot bearings. current suspect is a broken finger on the fork, talked to another guy at the event who had that happen and exactly the same symptom.

good news is I got home safe.

with the prep work to get the 928 painted, not sure if I'll get this fixed before the Oct DE events I had intended to attend, or in time to register.

maybe get more work done on the 930. I am hoping to have it on the road next year.

hit submit too fast.

I also had a loss of power during one session. symptoms was boost not going as high as normal and very low AFR.

immediate suspicion was intake leak.

sure enough, after some checking found one of the hose clamps on the pipe from IC to the intake loose. had that and the air cleaner box off checking TB tension. tighten up and back to normal. until the clutch issues.

always something on these old buggies.

Hey Bob, great thread and thanks for sharing with me offline. All of the DE talk reminds me of slinging my 914-6 and FV around Nelsons Ledges, Mid-Ohio and Putnam. I actually miss the splendid little track East of Cleveland with all of it's little charms....

My Porsches eventually ended with this. Key hole at Mid-Ohio and my only class win.

since that track event in Aug last year, life had been busy. regarding the car projects, doing a full brake caliper rebuild on the 928 and finally got all the engine parts and case shipped to Steve Weiner at rennsport systems for rebuild/recondition/maching work. along with my fan/housing and oil tank sent to Shaun at TRU6 to cerakote and a bunch of stuff to replate.

so finally dragged the 951 out of the trailer and into the shop.

hours later confirmed the cause of the clutch failure. one finger of the clutch fork broke. despite some small wear spots on it I cannot see anything around the break. if you have read this thread you will know I installed a completely new SPEC clutch, PP, alum flywheel, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, RMS, etc. only thing I did not replace was this damn clutch fork.

years ago the left rear torsion bar broke on my 85 911. no rust, corrosion, or any sign of cause. it just broke.

Monday I'll order the fork and all the exhaust gaskets for what I had to remove to get to it. when I built this car I had Lindsey Racing make my crossover exhaust pipe a 2-piece, glad I did.

while waiting on parts will do the oil/filter change, pull all the brake pads and clean the calipers, along with a full brake fluid flush. try to get all the maintenance work done so I is ready for the track this year.



and what may be one of my biggest accomplishments, finally made a beer mug from one of the bad cyl from the 930 project.

got the maintenance work all done, oil, flush brakes, etc.

got an interesting story from Lindsey racing. at one point these forks were discontinued. but Porsche has reissued them. don't know if it will have to come from germany like the little brake part for my 928 did.

good news is we dodged the bullet this year. last feb the ohio river flooded and got to 60.5 ft. we had 2-3 inches of water in the main bays. this year river crested at 55.5. but winter is not over so hoping for the best.

Glad you avoided the worst. We haven’t crested yet down here, but it will fall about 7 ft short of last year. I spent Sunday securing our sailing club and although the boatyard is already flooded, it looks like we should fair much better than last year!

got the new clutch fork and exh gaskets, so will get back to putting this car back together.

river level has been dropping but with the prediction of more rain on the way they expect it to rise again into the 50+ ft level. just as long as it stays below 60 my shop will be OK.

got the new clutch fork installed and tested. been in the process of buttoning it up. should be done in the next couple days.

hmm.... I'll think about it.

just got the transaxle bolted up yesterday. need to loosen the bolts to get it shifted to get the coupler to slide into place. last major item is bolting up the axles.

loosened the bolts and could wiggle it enough to get the drive shaft coupler in place. then got the axles bolted up.

next time will go over everything but think it is done...

going over everything noticed something I had been meaning to replace for some time. front suspension caster blocks with ER monoballs. now it is ready for some warmer weather so I can get it out for a test drive.

when replacing them I considered the caster adjustment eccentric. I can see how it would alter caster but then it would also alter toe in-out. may play with that when I work on the alignment. the new suspension allows for caster and camber adjustments on the strut top.

got the car done and off the lift. fired up and took for a drive. went to a spray/brush car wash to clean the car and as I was finishing the rinse thought I would use the low pressure to wash the dust off the engine. BIG MISTAKE. would not start. after several tries and waiting for a while to see if it would dry, call AAA.

at the shop started poking around more and found this. the coil pin on the dist cap had pulled out. now it was running to get there. next day the car started right up. this had been a new cap so I had the old one and put it in. car is running great. just need to adjust the clutch a bit.
