Question 996 to 993 steering wheel Swap

Will a 996 wheel work in a 993?

yes.

-disconnect battery for at least 20 minutes (to get rid of any residual voltage)

-loosen 2 Torx30 bolts from behind wheel that hold airbag in place.

-pull airbag slightly away from steering wheel unhook yellow connector from rear of airbag.

-break the 24mm nut loose on steering shaft

-center wheels, and level steering wheel. mark 12 o'clock on the shaft

-remove horn contact wires from steering wheel

-remove nut/washer from steering shaft

-remove steering wheel.

Installing the 996 wheel is a reverse procedure of the above.

Great, THANKS!! I thought it would be the same as when I pulled the air-bag wheel of my 88 951S:-) I just wasn't sure that the 996 wheel would swap over to the 993.
Thanks Again

here is a 996 wheel in my 993. This is one with a leather airbag and gold crest. I now have a leather airbag with the silver crest...just can't find a pic.

What about swapping from 996 to a 964 (both with airbags) ? Is it the same ?

eyue, the 996 wheel from from a 996 is not a direct swap, but can be done. Besides the steering wheel and airbag, you will need the steering column "clam shell" plastic covers from a 993, and the steering column shaft from a 993. Clockspring and horn contact from a 993 or 996 as well.
Lots of details in this rennlist thread: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78744&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

Another 3-spoke wheel option would be an Atiwe wheel from FVD or other retailers. (Pelican doesn't list them, but may be able to get you one)

Max,

With your 3 spoke wheel is the view of the dash gauges, increased, decreased or the same?

ron, the diameter of the wheels are almost exactly the same, and the diameter of the grip is very close too.

wheel straight- view is the same
wheel turned- view is a little better than the four -spoke because of less mass to block the gauges.
