Engine Knock in 1990 C2

When starting the car cold or warm after letting the car sit for an hour or more, there is a noticable knock coming from the left side. The mechanic claims it is a collapsed hydraulic tensioner. Does this sound reasonable? How much should this cost? Does anyone have a mechanic recommendation in Orange County, CA or even LA?

Thanks,

Rockafella

A '90 C2 doesn't have "hydraulic tensioners"!!! Find a new mechanic...

A little bit more info: it goes away after the car gets hot. This is maybe 10 to 20 min of running after a cold or warm (been sitting for 1 hour or more). The wrench said it was the chain tensioner not tensioning and letting the timing chain slap around. Sound reasonable? He also said it's ok to leave it. I'm not too sure about that....engine noises can get expensive.

I had a 3.2 Carrera which had a noisy chain due to the tensioner being a little slow on cold startup. The local P specialist changed it with the engine in place and changed the worn chain ramps. Since ut didne involve getting the engine out it wasnt troo expenive.

Sorry about the dumb comment about no hydralic tesioners earlier...I had a brain fart...I was thinking valves and hydralic lifters as in the 993...

We have changed quite a few 964 chain tensioners at my shop in Ct. The early cars (89-90) seem to have more of this problem then the later .From your description it sounds quite plausible that this could be your problem
