front 964 caliper same as Audi RS2?
 
Hi guys.

First post on pelican didnt realise there was a forum on here.

Ive been looking around trying to find information as to what brake calipers are shared with the Porsche 964 carrera 4.

So far im getting very conflicting information.

I have read that the 964/968cs and Audi RS2(witout optional large brake upgrade) share the same calipers.

Is there a list anywhere of cars which use teh same Brembo calipers?

If not does anyone know if the Audi RS2 calipers fit or not or if an adapter is needed.

There are 3 sizes of multi piece, 4 piston, Brembo caliper used on all Porsches
Small
Medium large
Large

They come in 2 different configurations for mounting
Leading
Trailing

They come in 2 different mounting styles
Axial
Radial

The come w/ different piston sizes.

The n/a, non RS, 964 are all small, leading, axial mounts- front 36/40, rear 28/30

944t, 951, 968, 928 and 993 used different versions of hese calipers.

I don't recall if the Audi used the small 964 calipers as described above or the medium large 928S4/993 front 36/44

my calipers are axial mounted by the looks of it.

These are teh Audi ones they look to be similar to the 993 medium radial mount.
Would I be able to fit these with an adapter do you know?

Yes 964 smalls on my car.
The problem is the metal inserts on my car have corroded and pushed out binding the pads even though I have filed the edges.
the screws holding them are all badly corroded. some of the rubber seals around teh pistons are also damaged

it may be a big job to get out the corroded screws and will take time If I cant get them out it will get very expensive. My car is needed every day so my idea is to buy new/used calipers fit them myself and refurb my calipers at my leasure or sell them on or both.
I have chance to get these calipers new at what appears to be a very reasonable price especialy if I can sell mine on.

edited to add. another option it to get a mechanic to do the job but My mechanic is quite far away so getting the car there and back is an issue.
also cost is a concideration. if my mechanic has trouble getting out the screws labour will start geting prohinative and he will probaly want the car for a few days which will also make things difficult.

while searching for a pair of used calipers I came across these brand new ones for the audi. If they will fit with an adapter it seems like it will be the most cost effective way of sorting out my brakes. Only IF they fit of course

Some more Info these are for the a 322mm disk option on the RS2 that these calipers are for.
the part number for those audi calipers is 8A0615105K and 8A0615106K

Those are Large(aka Big Red), radial mount. It is difficult to tell the difference between them and the medium large 928S4/993 front caliper as there is < 10mm difference between them.

the large calipers need a larger rotor than the medium large because the ~10mm difference is all radial, so generally the large calipers cannot replace the small unless the rotor is ~320mm or better in diameter.

When the large replace the medium-large(rotor permitting) the same adaptor(if any) is used.

That's a common malady especially when winter use is involved.

The ss pad retainers are held in by a single screw, heat them w/ a heat gun to loosen the loktight and they should come out easily.

Piston seals and rebuild kits are readily available.

That sounds like the rotor for the large(Big red) calipers you pictured. Though sometimes they used the medium-large calipers on them as on the 3.3 965s

Bill,

So if I understand you right. I can fit those but would also need to buy bigger rotors and an adaptor.
I have a source for the adaptor but would the larger disks fit straight on a 964? I asumme I would use the 993 TT disks?

Sorry if these are silly questions I have never changed out calipers or disks for different versions. on any car let alone a Porsche.

would it be safe just to upgrade teh frints and leave teh rears standard on a C4?

If so then yes, you can get the 322x32 you need a caliper adaptor

Bill I looked at the the plates. 14 years of UK weather has took its toll.

There are 2 plates per caliper and are held in by 2 screws each side. I would geuess that either they have never been replaced or at some time someone has replaced them with some lower quality allen heads screws.
The hexagonal hole that you would fit the allen key in has corroded away so no allen key will fit. Im guessing they would have to be drilled out. which is why I filled the pads and went looking for replacement calipers. they often appear on ebay.

If I need to replace the old plates and get re build kits with prices as they are here in the uk its already gettign expensive. plus pads etc etc.

but the main problem is Im alaways under time pressure. as This is my only car I cant afford to work on it for more than a few hours before I either have to go to work or pick kids up.

sorry Bill I dont think I explained myself very well.

Yes I own a 964 with caliper problems. I was looking around and came accross RS2 calipers which I have read can fit a 964 but other people dissagreed.

I was just looking for the most cost effective way and least time consuming way of replacing/refurbing my calipers.

So, I have about 10 sets of 964 1989 to 1994 brake calipers. I am not clear on if they will fit the Audi's? Anybody know? I have both early and late sets.

"for the most cost effective way" find yourself good used 964 calipers. Ebay is full of them.

Also, post above ^^^^^^^^^ is from people that I know, Authobahn. They have plenty of goodies and sell good stuff.

Porsche brakes is a bit of "need to know a lot before doing things" area. You can find things right on this board with minimal efford. Then you'll realize that your brake balance will shift, you'll need another rears and master cylinder etc. it will endup very expensive and time consuming.

So, probably good used 964 calipers are the best. Plus, I've seen that very pic of big reds posted all over forsale ads over many years.... Buyer beware:)
