Starter problems

Dear Fellow 964 owners

I own a 1992 964 C2 with 103,000 miles. When starting the engine it spins a few times and then disengages. It is either spinning too freely causing the gear to disengage or the starter needs replacement. I normally need to turn the key on and off to spin the starter two or three times to start it. It is not like the engine just cranks and cranks. It is a quick spin and out.

Any ideas on why the starter will not stay engaged?

Broken teeth on the starter and/or flywheel? Or the starter is not moving into position?

Also, a bad dual mass flywheel will do it, but I suspect a bad starter,

I have the exact same problem but it's only when the engine is hot. Once it cools down, starter grabs normally and car starts just fine. So, I bought the heat resistant cover for the starter. It is essentially just insulation for the starter. Getting ready to install it.

I had the exact same thing, (started mostly on first try when cold 90 C2 at 102 k ) Added a hot start relay kit which helped a bit but one day I turned the key and it was dead. Replaced the starter and thought I was good to go but it was still dead...Turned out to be the lead from the ignition switch (the yellow one) I ran a new one to the solenoid and it starts like new...I think the starter going out and turning the key so many times caused the lead to the solenoid to give out..

Not so bad, I needed to do the CV Joint boots on the right axle shaft anyhow and the extended length nut for the top mount on the starter was a great add on...that nut was tough to get to..

I had the same problem, bad Bendix on the starter. Starter replacement fixed it. .
