Removing clutch cross shaft 964-rusty?
I am doing my first 911 clutch job. Everything has gone relatively smoothly until I attempted to remove the clutch cross shaft. I am using a slide hammer to no avail. I have soaked the area with PB Blaster penetrating oil (48 hours) and no luck yet. The heat shields are quite rusty (I think the car grew up on the coast- I've only had it a short time) so I'm guessing it's a corrosion problem.
Any tricks out there for my problem? |

Try heating the area. It worked for others with the same problem.

Can't imagine why it wouldn't come out with a slide hammer, or even need a slide hammer. Those needle bearings aren't that tough with the retaining bracket off. Good luck, though.

This is a good thread of the same from the 911 board.
Yes, those needle bearings are tough when rusted. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=272679&highlight=g50+cross+shaft

Thanks so much for that thread. Now I understand what's going on. Looks like the socket and bolt trick is the way to go. I think I'll heat the fork at the needle bearings first. I've been using penatrating oil all week, and it hasn't made a difference.

ok, forgive the stupid question: did you inspect the area close and insure you don't have something impacted that is preventing it from coming out?

you did take the retaining bolt off, eh? go extremely easy when using the slide hammer or you can break the mounting ears for it off the bellhousing, and then you're in deep shiite. more PB blaster and be patient.

There is only the retaining piece on the outside of the case and I easily removed that. It's pretty tough to see anything on the inside of the housing, but it can only be rust that's causing the problem. I have since pulled the engine and split the transmission on my '90 964 (wrecked- let my 19 year old son take a joy ride) parts car, and it only took a pair of pliers to remove the shaft, and everything came right apart. I think I'll be patient and apply the penatraitng oil for another couple days before I go at it with the slide hammer again.
