Do I have a k40 installed?

OK... New-to-me '90 964 C4 Cab here.

The PO (orig. owner) told me that the car had a Clifford alarm system and a Motorola 3W phone installed (both de rigueur in the late '80's/early '90's).

So, it was no surprise to me that there would be a 3-position switch located under the steering column, just as described in the Clifford manual. But, there was another switch as well right next to it, a switch with a 'click' On/Off and about 300° additional rotation such as a dimmer switch or rheostat might have. I always assumed this had something to do with the phone. Since the phone was removed leaving only the 3W gooseneck holder, I assumed it was a dead switch. My intention was to remove all the associated hardware and electronics at a future date.

On a seemingly unrelated note, when I got the car, there was condensation inside the rear taillaights (FL car from humid climate), so I removed the panels with the intention of blowing compressed air through them to eliminate the condensation. It turned out that the vent tube from the center panel was disconnected. I reconnected it and the condensation disappeared within a day. But, while I had the center panel removed, I noticed a black 'module' attached between the sheetmetal and the light panel. I assumed it had to do with engine electronics or perhaps an accelerometer for the air bag system, and thought little of it.

One day, I decided to turn the switch under the dash, ignition On, engine off. When I did, two indicators on the Oil Temp/Pressure gauge flashed 4 times and went out. There were also 4 'chirps' in unison with the flashes. When I turned the knob further, the 'chirps' switched to clicks. One of the indicators flashing (lower left) was labeled 'Check Engine'. Both these indicators were noticably dimmer than the rest of the warning indicators during the 'Bulb Check' and did not light at all if the switch was clicked Off. Alarmed at triggering a 'Check Engine' light, I immediately turned the ignition off.

(you can see the indicators in the upper/lower left, much dimmer than the rest

Then I read the thread here about the member from Germany titled: '964 alarm'. People here identified his issue as being an installed K-40 detector, and included a link to the K-40 manuals, and it got me thinking that maybe that was what this mystery switch on my car was.

Several things added creedence to my theory. There was the black module mounted on the rear. There were the flashing indicators on the Oil Temp/Pressure gauge (neither of these indicators were described or pictured in my Owners Manual), there were the 'chirps' and clicks associated with the flashing indicators and the indicators were noticably dimmer just like the LEDs w/ the K-40 would be when compared to the incandescent bulbs of the other warning indicators. The only thing that concerns me here is that the rotary switch under the dash is not split into two separate switch functions such as the one described in the earlier thread

What's the verdict? Do you think I have an installed K-40? Is my Oil Temp/Pressure gauge from another generation, maybe a 993 to have these two 'unused' indicators present, and used for the detector? Is there some other sure-fire way to tell if this system is in my car?

As always, TIA!

Cheers!

Sounds kinda like it, but the switches are different.

If you can see the front or rear receiver they should have markings on them.

Here are pictures of the front and rear I found on my car. The front can be seen through the lower grille with a flashlight (along with some dead bugs).

Hope it helps.
