First post on this forum, so hello all.
Now down to business. I'm about to purchase my first Porsche, I have been looking at late 993's (approx. £35K's worth). However, the car I was after has just been sold. On the plus side a nice 3.3 Turbo 2 has turned up. It has 26000 miles on the clock and 2 months ago had £3k of speedline 18's fitted. I would be interested in anyone’s experience of these cars, reliability, costs, general enjoyment and ultimately should I be more sensible and stay with the 993? |

As far as your original post: I've heard nothing but wonderful things about the turbos, aside from the usual warnings about the higher maintenance costs. There is a thrill that comes with turbocharged cars, when the boost kicks in and suddenly the car is flooded with 100 or more extra horses, but I prefer the n/a cars for their more predictable driving characteristics. turbo 2
I have a 91 turbo with 40,000 miles on it.The car is a blast to drive and is one of hottest looking cars porshe has made. The only issue I have heard on these cars have been with the dual mass clutch arrangement which may require replacement around 50,000 miles.

My $.02 worth, I drive a n/a '91 and love the looks and performance! I do however end up in the same run group as a '92 turbo on a regular basis and that is one kick-a$$ car! While I always reel'em in through the twisties he launches away again on the straights..... right after I hear that blaaat of the turbo kicking in! I agree the 964 turbo body is one of the very best looking (and possibly fun to drive, tho I've never) P-cars ever made! Booo on the 993, unless it's a turbo, stay with the 964 and enjoy lower operating costs and easier maintinance.

Oh please!
The operating costs of a 964 are much higher than the costs of a 993!
Remember: 964 -> you have to take the engine out if you want to adjust the valve clearance (993 = hydro rods) 964 -> much more electronic than a 993! 964 C4 -> a much more complex all wheel drive than a 993! So watch out if the car has a high mileage! BTW: I do have a 964 C4 turbolook ("30 Jahre 911"). A great (but expensive) car. |

To be frank I don't care about running costs. it's just a toy. I went for a T2 in the end. I have fitted Roock Sport suspension, original 3.6 splitts and had the front seats recovered. It is just waiting for a hybrid turbo and C2 cams to be fitted.
Very glad I went for the T2 over the 993, Turbo's are so much more fun. I suspect i'll shop it for a 993tt soon. |
