To tint or Not to tint? - 964 Targa
Hey guys,
It's finally getting hot in my area. I own a '91 Targa and occasionally carry a child seat in the back. My 4.5 yrs old daughter often complains about not being able to take a nap in the car. I think its because of the skylight. Now I wonder if the tint will help, but also wonder if it's possible to apply tinting on the contour shape of the glass. I personally liked it without tint by look but who knows? You should have a good example to change my mind. So please share some pix and the result with us. Assuming it would help a/c operation as well. Thanks in advance for all your help. BW

Purists will turn their noses up but a Targa probably justifies it if you get lots of sun. It'll have to be applied in strips by someone good or it'll be awful.
Keep the side windows untinted, that's my opinion. You can always remove it down the road.

I use a rectangular screen with suction cups when I have the kids in the back. (I bought it in a baby stuff store)
It works fine and I can remove when I have no kids. I don't like tint so I vote "No"

Thanks guys for your opinions.
I think the rectangular screens would be nice and practical! When I was browsing ebay I found one example. It indeed looks cool on a white car but my car wouldn't look the same if tint is applied. It will take some of the openness out of the car. My car is Amazon green + black Targa top + tinted targa canopy = heaviness! Anybody have a dark colored targa with a tinted canopy? |

i tinted the rear and rear side windows full dark......love it!!
this is a black targa so it looks factory. done by a local tint shop, truly looks factory original. check my garage pics but i dont remember if that was taken before or after....... i say do it, but have it done by a good tech!

Here is my 980 Silver with full dark tint...The rear window was done in ONE piece, the tech fitted it from the outside and had to remove wiper arm to make it but that was it, He did a great job and so far no legal issues (tint is too dark on side windows) I have modded my car to satisfy me...purists be damned...dont care what anyone else thinks, it is mine and my daily driver..

Thanks for sharing your info. Your car with the rear canopy tinted definitely looks kool! Is the tinting film one piece or 3 pieces? How did they treat the seams if it's 3 pieces? We also would like to know how much it would cost for the work. BW

its done in one piece.
(sorry if i mislead you by mentioning rear side windows) the tech prepared the film a bit oversized by cutting to shape on the window outside, then trimmed it as he installed it on the inside. no bubbles, defroster still works, looks factory! labor and parts cost me $75 a couple years ago.

I think tint will look great, esp with a black targa bar. That said, I wouldn't tint it for my kids sake, I'd do it only if YOU want to tint it. Kids are resiliant, so I make mine "suffer" by riding in my untinted Porsche

To be honest it depends. If you live in a hot or very bright area like Palm Springs I only recommend smoking them at best, buy your self proper eyewear! But for anyone who is planing to drive fast I do not recommend it, I dislike the lack of visibility at night or poor weather conditions.

I have a '91 in GR, and I would definitely do it if I had a little one back there. It's a friggin' greenhouse under that glass. I think it looks fine. For a good tinter, that job is a piece of cake.
