964 engine/transmission woes

Just replaced the starter and now the transmission will not shift on its own or go into manual mode. Did I disconnect the harness to the transmission? Then just before I got it to the house, the engine began to cut out and then cut back in...rinse/repeat the rest of the way home. When I got home and shut off the car, a rather large cloud of smoke emerged from the engine bay. It sort of smelled electrical. Anyone have any experience with these symptoms? Thanks!

If you did nothing but replaced starter, are yuo sure "new" one is working and not having continuous shortcut and this causing trouble and smoke. Did battery cable give any sparks when you receonnected it?
Even new started worked initially, it may have failed as well - was it brand new?

Well, I found the culprit...it was me. I did not connect the grounding strap to the lower starter bolt, so all kinds of electrical problems were inevitable. Connected the grounding strap and all is well! I will pay closer attention next time!
