Cone air filter
Would a cone air filter help my 95 993 breath better ?. I see a lot of them on these cars. I have the stock setup with a drilled box cover. Btw. Thanks to you all for the education. Great forum.

Not really sure but I changed mine, can't hurt and it's not big bucks. It does sound really good and is much easier to add oil and such as there is way more space with the plastic box gone.

The cone air filter doesn't breath more than your oem drilled box. Do you have a good air filter?
And here's what Fabspeed says about their airbox : Don't be fooled! Flat style filter system like our CUP airbox are 99% of the time better then any cone filter system. The Stock 993 Airbox bottom has a “Velocity Stack” that makes the air in the box flow faster into the engine because it smoothes out the air. |

If you want one I have one. I had to go back to the factory airbox because of club race rules.

Based on my experience with Fab Speed I wouldn't believe a word they say! Can't believe the number of problems I had with this company, wow! If you get the right one it will flow air every bit as good as the factory unit if not better. Do not buy the one with the bend, the cone should fit directly over the intake plenum so it is positioned in back and you see it from the side when standing at the rear of the car. If there is any restriction issue it will be at the high RPM band when the flow is at max. If you don't track the car and drive at the upper RPM band for continuous time then it will not be an issue.

Sounds like fab speed lost a customer. I have their exhaust I purchased used but have never delt with their co. Sounds my factory setup is just fine. I don't track it. But run it to 4500rpm every once in a while going down the turnpike. ( have the ticket for proof ) this thing uses 0 oil. Never had such a great engine. Becoming a porschephile. Thanks for input all.

You should try running it to 6500 rpm.

With these engines RED LINE means RED LINE, your good to go to 6,000 all day long. At 4,500 you are just getting to the mid point of the power curve. Max RPM is 6,700 so you have a lot room to let it wind up. The engine is designed and built to rev. This is a high quality racing engine and almost bullet proof unless your fool and drive at 8,000 RPM in 1st gear for 2 miles. From 4,000 to 6,000 RPM your engine HP almost doubles to bad the torque didn't as well! Next time your on the turnpike let it wind to 6, it sounds like its made to run in the upper RPM bands.
BTY my issue with FabSpeed is that I bought the low restriction cats and X pipe set-up (I am a big believer in letting the engine breath as restriction free as possible re the cone filter & low restriction cats). Before buying I asked if this was a simple bolt on. They assured me no problem just bolts right on. I got the parts and the shipment included 2 right side cats, I returned one of the rights at my cost and they shipped me the left one. Next I went to start the install and the cats didn't fit into the support bracket where the OEM cat assembly was fastened. I tried explaining this and they assured me their techs say its good. I took photos and sent them down and returned the assembly and told them to install this on a 993. After they attempted to install their product the admitted the cat pipes need to be all changed (again all the R&R and shipping is at my cost) next I went to install the O2 sensors and found the bungs were crooked at I had to modify the wires one side. I sent this back as well (again at my cost) and the kept telling me their techs checked it and it's good. I finally told them to look at the bleepin thing it's simple to see with your eyes. They finally saw what I was saying and cut and fixed that as well. The cats (both sides) had to be modified so that they lined up with the OEM support bracket. It will likely fit 993's now but much of that at my expense. Tell you one thing I wouldn't want their techs working on my car! Last edited by rbp; 06-25-2013 at 02:35 PM.. |

Talk about crappy R&D and customer service. Sorry for your pain. That's all I need to know to stay clear. Thanks

My '90 C4 is going 105mph when I approach the redline in 3rd gear and around 135 or 140 in 4th gear. Just drive it hard like it was meant to be driven. You'll fall in love all over again. You don't have to redline before shifting gears every time you pull out of the driveway, but if you don't know how your car behaves in its comfort zone (5,000-6,500 rpm) then you don't know your car.

Try it in 2nd. You don't need to break the law in order to fully appreciate a 911.

I agree, when I let mine wind up it is usually entering an on ramp with no traffic. With WOT in 1st gear you will hit the 6,000 RPM range almost instantly, drop into second and hit the throttle again. It all happens very fast. Usually by then I skip 3rd and move to 4th or 5th depending on speed. There is no law against accelerating fast. Of course for me it's not an every day thing but great to let it wind up every so often.

At least 60% of my shifts are at redline; once you're used to it, your clutch foot drops just as the rev limiter activates. Can't imagine not driving this way; my car is on it's 6th owner at 135k miles and uses one quart of oil every 3000 miles.

Drove the car skipping 3rd and pulling rpms up on first and second. Worked well. Thanks. These Okies are breaking their neck looking for what's making that strange exhaust note ?
