964 Backdate Project

I just got this car from California as a new project. 1990 Carrera 2 with G50 and some backdates. The car was gone through for a Pre Purchase Inspection by John Chambers in Oceanside, CA and he documented that the car had suspension issues and #5 cylinder had 0 lbs pressure on the leak down test and seemed to have a exhaust valve sticking.

I bought it off the internet and had it shipped to Tallahassee for fit and finish issues at G. Davis Auto, a trusted Porsche Mechanic and my brother.

Things I Liked

The car was overall clean, had the rear seat delete, good base colors, clean car-fax, and upgraded suspension to Bilstein & H&R green springs.

Work had been done to make it a 73 RS clone and the front quarters had been extended, they had made it a long nose, R Gruppe light in the rear, RS door panels, they put the duck tail on and the Carrera logos.

Things I Did Not Like

I knew immediately the green colors had to go, so I was ready for some changes immediately. I also needed to fix the front suspension issues and #5 cylinder. There were fit, finish and interior issues that I would be getting on.

Keep us posted with pictures and updates as you work your way thought the car. I think you've started with a good base car and it can only get better from there.

Let's get Started

Once the car was delivered to G. Davis Auto in Tallahassee, we got a better look at the car

We decided the car needed new rubber, springs, wheels stripped and repainted.

Getting Started

We got the car in the air and removed wheels for color change and decided to drop the motor out to rebuild the top end.

Parts Need to be Cleaned

Looking Clean and Pretty - Now the heads were sent to Anchor Atlantic for attention
and the parts were stored on the shelf.

Wheels and Springs arrived.

Rear view with motor out and new springs installed. We realized once we took the front springs off that the prior owner had stripped the heads on the Bilstein shocks and we needed to replace them.

Wheels were stripped of green color and prepped for respray, because of cold weather they were left to dry in a heated room for two days.

Little Details

Since the colors are white and black, Geoff sent me to Ernie's Alloys to get a set of old center caps and use them to accent the car. Great Idea.

New B&B Headers & Exhaust - but I get stuck

So I just got a B&B Exhaust off Pelican (thanks Matt) and my mechanic/builder/brother has an emergency for his biggest client, so I am stuck for about 30 days.

Got a few more Porsche projects waiting on funding. Damn Economy and expensive children keep the projects to 1 a year. Last years 69 Firebird 400 RestoMod took almost 1200 hours. Keep watching for the 964 backdated to 74 IROC RSR after I finish this one.

Is G. David Auto the little porsche shop down in Tally? I have been trying to find the place I went to years ago to see if they have any projects or at least some parts I might could use on a 66 912 I just bought.

Thanks
Mike

Getting back to Work

So after a little distraction called work, we are back into the project. As always we decided to go a little deeper into the rebuild, and cracked the bottom end to get a peak.

Case Opened

Case Closed
