Cant Find the Ignition Unit

My 1989 C4 hasnt any spark. And I cant find the ignion module. While visitn the Permatune web site I noted they said that the complete coil
ignition mod can be removed via the two 6mm socket heads. Ive found the two bolts but I am unable to see anything that looks like a igntion conttrol unit.

The twin coils are right there in the left side of the engine bay. Right below them on the same bracket, are the two ignitors. They look like tiny black boxes that have multi-plugs going into them and two wires each coming out that connect to their respective coils.

Unless, that is, the '89 C4 is a special bird. I know the '89 C4 has many things that are different from the '90-'94 C2/C4 line, so maybe this is one of them.

Cant Find the Ignition Unit

Thanks Tyson, Ive removed them and have them on my desk. They certainly dont look like what I had thought. Are these the units that should emit the high frequency whine that everyone talk about ? Any thoughts on replacing them or installing a permatune solution /

There is no Permatune option for 964 and the units do not emit any sort of noise. You are refering to the previous CD ignition used on 911SC (to 1983) and 911 Turbo (to 1989).

If you have no spark you need to do the diagnosis first, it's unlikely that both coils or both amplifiers would fail. One possibility is the distributor drive belt. Refit the coils and check for spark at both circuits. If you still have the original fuel pump relay (which should be changed every 5 years) replace it. It's in the fuse/relay board and the part number is 944 615 227 00, the update version is 993 615 227 00 and cost's about $20.

While you are there make sure you have new ABS and ABS pump relays. The pump relay can stick, causing the pump to run continously =$2500 repair. The realys should be dated newer than 1992 to be safe (there was a in-service replacement scheme)

Question Cant Find the Ignition Units

I have 12 volts to the ignition control units. I have had the high side distributor caps off and the rotor was spinning. Wouldnt it
be unlikely for it not to run at all.
Im thinking a loose wire on the DME.
comments please
