My power steering fluid has a slow but ugly leak. It appears to be coming from one or both ends of the black hose that goes up and over the fuel filter, and back down behind the air filter. Hose is illuminated in photo, leaks are in the red boxes.
The ends contain a metal insert (?) and are not tight at either end, but not falling off or anything like that (not sure how far up metal goes, can't get it to slide that far). Can I simply apply a pair of hose clamps? I see that a lot of power steering fluid contains "stop-leak" but since I'm using Dexron I'm guessing that's not an option. So my question is, should this hose be tight to it's insert, and if so, hose-clamps okay? Hate to replace this hose if I don't have to, I remember one of the PS hosing being stupid-expensive, would rather have it rebuilt if possible. Thanks guys. Oh and for the record it's a 90 C2.

Nope, you need to buy a new hose.

Could someone be so kind as to expand on prior comment? Does the metal actually run all the way through the rubber hose? Is the leak usually somewhere below/not related to, the area I asked about hose-clamping? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, |

You can always try to put a hose clamp on them, but I highly doubt it will do anything as you can't get the clamp tight enough, & the crimped end is not a perfect circle.

964 C2/C4/Turbo (1989-1994) - Power Steering, Lines I have repaired crimped hoses for "short term use" by cutting off the crimped metal near the base of the rubber hose and then using (2) QUALITY worm clamps.

My 964 started pouring ATF from the Power Steering hoses today and I'm in the process of changing the hose itself. Just ordered them from the dealership (Albuquerque Porsche) and I'll have them tomorrow. It started as a small leak a few weeks ago but has finally became a gusher today.

I took mine to a hydraulic shop, they made me a new hose in 45 minutes, I think it cost $65 and it works like a charm! Just FYI next time it happens. They cut off and used the two ends and attached a new hose.

Hi Guys, I have the same problem & I fixed it with hose clamps, but now it's started to leak again & the hose inflated what would be causing it to inflate? could there be another problem?

Sorry here's A better explanation, The hose is now double the size due to pressure, looks like it'll pop any time soon, is there anything that could be causing this? With the crimping the hose onto the pipe how is this done?
Thanks Gus, from Syd. Australia |

The hose expanded because the layers inside have seperated. It will soon split open!
This is a high pressure hose, hence the special crimped ends and high pressure rated hose. As others have said, it can be repaired by a shop with the right tools or you can buy a replacement from Pelican. I would do the latter and be done.... |

Answered this in your engine rebuild forum post. What is ballooning is the protective outer sleeve that is filling up with fluid that leaked from the actual hose, but now has no where to go because you put hose clamps on the protective sleeve. Short story- your clamps are doing nothing, and the hose can be replaced at a hydraulic shop for less than $100.
