Help with engine# for 993

Hi Forum members,

I need to get an idea of what engine numbers for the 1995-98 993 production cars are. I needed to provide the insurance company with the info and the number is hard to read since the air conditioning compressor is in the way and only with the help of a mirror and flashlight can one attempt to decipher the actual stamping. I am getting something like 84W01---

It may actually be 64W01---?

Anyone knows how engine numbers are generated and what the first two places mean?

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, it should start with "64", which is the engine type designation. "W" corresponds to the 1998 model year.
