92 964 Alternator Burned
Any help is appreciated. After leaving my car sitting all summer i found the battery to be dead. I purchased an automatic charger and charged the car for 2 days with the battery cables removed. I then proceeded to install the cables and i found it odd to have the terminals spark as i attempted to connect them to the battery posts. A minute or so after i began to hear fans running and smoke coming from the engine compartment. I popped the hood to find my alternator on fire. I had not experienced that in the past. Any thoughts as to what could have caused it and what the extend of the damage might be?
Thank you all. |

First thought is that you connected the battery (pos/neg cables) backwards.

You charged the battery backwards, perhaps. It can be done with a totally dead battery and no sparks to tell you the charger's clamps are on wrong. If so, say goodbye to the computer.

IF you did NOT charge the battery backwards and you did NOT re-install the battery backwards, did you disconnect and reconnect the cables in this order:
1.Disconnect neg. cable first 2.Disconnect pos. cable second 3. Reconnect pos. cable first 4.Reconnect neg. cable last ? If not done in that order, you can reverse the polarity of the diodes within the alternator and/or voltage regulator and that is harmful. |

I can be sure I didn't charge the battery in reverse but I cannot recall whether or not I disconnected and reconnected the cables in the appropriate order. Is there a way to fix this?
I thank you all for your help. |

I have a new alternator and voltage regulator but I'm afraid to install them if there is something else more serious.

Could this be caused by possibly a bad ignition switch?
