996 TT 60K mile servic cost

My 2003 996 TT just turned 60K miles. I called the dealer to see how much the 60K mile service would cost. Quote, including replacing spark plugs, was $2895 before any Porsche Club discount. Dealer said spark plugs really ran up the cost because they had to remove he exhaust system. From reading the forum, it sounds like that is not as bid a deal as it sounds.

Is this for real, or is the dealer trying to take me to the cleaners?

You may be due for a 'Major' or 'Minor' service which is why it may be high.
For plug replacement, my indy charged me $110.00 plus 125.00 Labor .

I have a 1999 996TT.

I just had the major 30K service done by Momentum Porsche in Houston.
It included spark plug replacement as well. Total was less than $1100
sounds like you are getting taken? What did your 30K service cost?

Some of this could be based on location (NYC costs more than some other areas for instance). Also, is the shop actually quating you"book time" or actual time. They usually quote book time. Also, did it include EVERYTHING that gets replaced/inspected at a 60K service or did you ask for just specific items at 60K that you didn't want to do yourself?

It pays to shop around.. is there only 1 dealer you can take the car to? Given the cars age, its out of warranty, so having a reputable independent perform the service might cost less too.

I know its petty.. but it always shocks me how someone who buys what was a $100-150K car get anxious at a $3K repair bill.. or $1500 for tires... did you think that it would only cost $500 for something? ok.. rant off..

Let us know what you learn!

I have a 99 C2 996 and I was considering changing my own plugs and coils when needed. Now after reading how cheap Indy did the job for you, and hearing what a P I T A changing plugs are, I would reconsider and choose to have mine done by them. This may sound like a dumb question and probably is, what is INDY? Is this a chain of repair shops? I have seen the name Indy on several postings and often wondered. When they did your plugs, did they change the coils as well? and did your car react the same as before or better?

Yes, my independent repair guy, he only works on Porsche and German imports (in Atlanta). I didn't do coils. The plugs were a maintenance change and I didn't notice any difference.

You do not need to remove the exhaust to do plugs on your turbo, just the bumper cover and intercoolers....
It is actually an easy job, I can do it in about 2.5 hours.....
