Dumb Question -- Can you use a Cabriolet at a DE

without an aftermarket rollbar? I mean, would Porsche really have produced a 911 that you can't bring to a DE?

Another one...

So is the handling of the coupe vastly superior to the Targa...how much of a weight savings for the coupe?

Thanks in advance for enlightenment.

Mods, could you delete? I'm pretty sure the answer is No Way.

The Targa vs. Coupe question would probably be more applicable to the 911 Tech forum.

Yes, they would have, could have and did. Times change and rules change. The more recent 911's with the pop-up roll protection are legal in many DEs. I know of no organization that allows older cars to run without adding a roll bar. A DAS bar for a cabriolet isn't all that expensive. I started DE in my 993 cabriolet with a roll bar.

I would not say that any one sub-model is "vastly" superior to another, especially for DE. In DE an few hundred pounds is not going to make that much difference. Most of my students go faster when we add my 180 lbs to their cars. The weight only matters when you are running damn close to the limit for the entire lap (and that's unlikely in DE).

To add to the discussion, just do a search for JeremyD and look what he does with his street cabriolet. DAS rollbars and harnesses can be bolted in and out with ease. I'm adding one to my cab in about a month for DE's.
