Lone Pine Time Trials

Place: Manzanar, CA (~4 hours north of LA, off the 395)
Date: June 2-3
Cost: $60
What is it:

The Lone Pine Time Trials is an annual driving event (for the past 37 years) held on an abandoned airstrip. The course is 2 miles long, basically a big autocross/slalom. Because its a two day event and in a pretty remote location, you get a lot of driving time.

For those who aren't familiar with the area, its about 25 miles west of Death Valley. That means hot. It also means its windy most of the time, sometimes VERY windy (last year had constant 30 mph winds). The tarmac is in relatively poor condition and the cows use it as they please.

All of that being said, Lone Pine is a real adventure. Its a very raw experience, and a ton of fun. Most people who go leave saying "Lone Pine was AWESOME, it SUCKED!"

Last year a few of us 914ers went and had a great time. Only a couple drove, including Howard in his 996. This year I'm trying to get a larger contingent from the 914 group to go, but thought I would invite the 911 crowd as well. Porsches seem to be somewhat under represented at this event. Last year there was everything from a shifter kart to a V8 powered 240Z to some F-car.

There's also the beater class. It can be a team competition where multiple drivers share a car, or where teams compete with a budget of say $500 (for the car, tires, everything).

Here's a thread with pictures of last year's event from the 914world.com forum. Here

The registration form is now online. Here

From 914world: "They didn't mow the track before you went out?"

LMAO! This is the one AX for 15" wheels and 70 series tires.

Or, bring your rally car with tarmac (maybe) tires. Might want to throw on a set of gravel tires just to see, LOL!!
