front oil tank
Currently working on a track car project. Early car with high compression 2.4l and front mounted oil cooler. Looking to add a front mounted oil tank possibly from Smart Racing.
Anyone using smart racing's oil tank? Any for sale? Are there are alternatives to smart racing's tank? Any tips or suggestions? Thanks in advance. Andy |

Make your own, measure the smugglers box, sketch out what you need, send the sketch to someplace like Coleman. Take the $400 you save over the SRP tank, and buy some other goodies for your car.
We have fabricated, or have had fabricated, tanks for 5 cars, and there are zero issues with the oil systems.

Andy,
I just installed a Peterson Fluid Systems 3 gallon tank. See www.petersonfuildsystems.com for details. Their tech was happy to talk to me about all the details. This is a round tank to best deal with de-aeration. It, according to them, does a superb job. The cost was $339 far less than the SRP unit. They also put on the type fittings I wanted at no extra charge. I had to modify the smuggler's box a bit. I know that some race classes don't allow tub modifications so check your rule book carefully before you make changes. I did look at Stef's (search for their site) as well and called them. They were quite happy to build a custom tank and quoted me $700 for one that had the dimensions of the smuggler's box. I am researching now on how best to deal with mounting an OEM t'stat in the front to prevent overpressure. I can send pics if you like. Cheers -bt |

see pics at:
http://home.comcast.net/~rktucker/photo.htm I was going to post photos on PPTBBS but the small ones were hard to see. Basically I cut out slots in the front and back to fit the tank in. The diameter of the tank is 9 inches and the mount adds about 1/2 inch. |

Thanks Bob.
Quick couple of questions. What engine configuration are you running? What size of fittings/hose are you running? Is the 3 gallon sufficient? Most applications that I have seen are 4 gallon. I would appreciate your thoughts. I like this setup. Nice and low. Thanks Andy |

This is one of the tanks I made -16 return, -16 feed and vent. This tank fits with no cutting at all. Cost was about half that of the SRP tank.
In my living room ![]() ![]() Fitted ![]() Another one installed .

Nice tank TimT!
Andy, What engine configuration are you running? -> Now running a 3.8 built on a 90 3.6, knife-edged, boattailed, medium cams, stock FI chipped etc etc. What size of fittings/hose are you running? -> -16AN Is the 3 gallon sufficient? Most applications that I have seen are 4 gallon. I would appreciate your thoughts. -> Don't know yet, I hope so. The capacity is 18 quarts now. Last year I was running with the original 73 oil tank in the rear and for a track application it didn't have enough volume. Capacity with the OE tank was 15. Can't really compare apples to apples as I added a 964 cooler in the fender which holds 2 quarts by itself. The thing with the Peterson tank is that I could get a different tank half and increase without having to change too much. I had overheating problems last year due many issues one being volume. I like this setup. Nice and low. -> It's been a learning process. Yes the gravity thing was a consideration. Changing the oil is a bit of a pain, I may cut a hole in the bottom to remove the plug if I can't find a nice suction pump. The tank is a 3 gallon but they suggest it be run 2/3 full so having 8 quarts available seems like it should be enough. If I had an aluminum TIG I may have had a go at building one myself but the stuff like de-aeriation are hard to engineer so I let someone else do that. There has to be folks on this forum that have been there before me and know what works best for their config. I will find out how this config works for me next month when the snow, check that, if the snow is gone so I can get the car in the trailer. |
