heading to new jersey motorsports park lightning
Hi folks,
I have been bombing around Lime rock in northwestern connecticut with various regions of the porsche club for the past two years. I have probably done 18 days since 2010, plus a weekend at watkins glen for good measure. I auto-x as well. I have done over 10 events this season among three regions. question is I have never seen lightning. I have watched some laps from youtube but don't know what to really expect. if any folks here have some videos they recommend as well as tips from their experience, I am all ears. I am in the yellow instructed run group with the CVR region and my last instructor from this past monday said I was ready to move straight up to white. having an absolute blast around lime rock to say the least. and I am looking forward to starting that learning curve at a new track.

NJMP Lightning is a fairly fast track and it is not very technical (at least in comparison to Thunderbolt). It is a little longer that Lime Rock and the most "exciting" part are probably two blind right turns, one of them being Turn 1. The "Lightbulb" is a large 90 degree turn that leads to the front straight. Go out with an instructor first. Turns 1 - 4 are key to being fast as they are all connected.
What car were you in last Monday? I was there too! CVR runs great events. Last edited by Frank 993 C4S; 09-15-2012 at 05:35 PM.. |

I would agree, stay with your instructor to learn your way around. Don't be in such a hurry to go out on your own, especially on a track you have never been to. Frank is absolutely correct. The key to getting through the two blind right hand turns is to stay on the juice. just point the car and trust your equipment, once you get through it your car will be set up to be where it should for corner exit.
Frank, after you left Lightning on Sunday the rain came and pretty much stayed the rest of the day. Third session of the day was black flagged due to a Boxster having issue. But I had an instructor sit with me during one of the rain sessions like we talked about. Too bad it was wet all afternoon, that guy gave me some real good pointers that I just can't wait to use the next time I am there. It was nice paddocking with you this past Labor Day weekend.

Mike, I was sorry to have missed the third session because it hadn't started raining yet. However, leaving early gave me the much needed points at home to be able to go to the Glen in October. It was great meeting you and I maintain that your car is too nice for the track!

Most of the incidents happen at turn one and turn five, the car gets loose in the middle of the turn and people spin to the inside where the guardrail is pretty close.
In both turns there is plenty of runoff on the outside of the corner... if you run wide don't try to save it, just drive off into the grass. It's a fun track, better than Thunderbolt IMO.

![]() here's a video from my smartphone I used for data logging. my favorite lap of the weekend. I got a slide going through the down hill chasing a new turbo! I would never go to a new track without an instructor, and I haven't asked to run without an instructor yet either. i think they are going to have to tell me to go out on my own at some point.
