04 Cayenne S engine shudder and pothole clunks

How's that for a title? I'm excited the Porsche Classic is giving our old work horses some love...

I'm continuing to go thru deferred maintenance on my 2004 951 and the latest may be one thing, or maybe two.

When I come to a stop light, a couple seconds after braking to a full stop, I get a shutter through the car as it falls to idle. I have replaced the top engine torque strap, and that removed some shutters, but not 100%. It's good, then shudders for 2 seconds, then idles fine.

Could this be the bottom motor mounts? How do we like the Lemfoerder versions vs Porsche?

Second issue, when I hit a speed bump or pot hole, I get a loud clunk up front. I do not get squeaking like the tech bulletin says about the sway bar rubber. I believe this is the engine bottoming out on the crushed mounts... Anyone think this could be related to the first issue?

Thanks pelicans!

Definitely sounds like both of those symptoms could be related to failing engine mounts.

Worth inspecting the mounts from underneath and replacing them if they look completely collapsed.

I was able to find two sets of Cayenne motor mounts in our catalog.

I agree, probably the motor mounts. I have a passenger side mount that needs to be changed, I’ll do both at the same time. I’ll probably also do the transmission piece as well. I wonder if there is a DIY post for the motor mounts.

I have a similar issue and need to change both motor mounts. I would also check the lower and upper control arms. I changed mine out myself then had the car aligned.

Im new to Porsche and unfortunately bought mine for use in Doinican Republic. Its a 2008 Cayenne Turbo S. I have two notice questions.

Does the motor need to be removed or is it something that can be lifted to replace motor mounts as I get a slight shake but been told they need to be replaced.

Also, would this be considered a GTS, Turbo, S as there is no selection on Pelican for model Cayenne Turbo S?

I will have more questions as I've had to replace the suspension air pump, sensors and it seems after a year and 7,000 miles new things keep popping up but I can't get a solid mechanic that I trust yet.

I love followups in PP, so wanted to give mine. I found that my rear control arm rubber is fast to deteriorate on all models (just like my old 2004 Mini Cooper) and had aluminum on steel once they collapsed. I bought the EuroWise kit, of upper an lower polyurethane kit, which you remove the aluminum + rubber Porsche mounts and then slide these in.

The best thing about these is that you can just remove the lower arms, press out the mounts (I used borrowed pullers from O'Reilly Auto) push the replacement ones in, then reinstall.

Once you do the bottoms, then re-install and then you can remove the A arms without removing the upper mounts from the body. This saves a LOT of work removing. It's tricky getting one bolt out of each of the arms, but feasible with skinny vice grips (don't worry about destroying the threads in the middle of the bolt) but once you do the A-arms come right tout.

Lube and slide in the poly mounts, slip in the brass centers and you've just saved a ton of time and thousands of dollars for the OEM units with the rubber which wears out anyway....

Now I still have the slight shudder a I roll up to stop lights, but the motor mounts didn't look too collapsed; but that's a more timely repair I'm up for next. You'll need a harbor freight engine holder to keep the motor up on the fenders as you remove those mounts.. Alas, that's another post, and another day!

I recently replaced my front lower control arms/ball joints...as the bushings were also gone on my 2004 TT. I bought a Turbo S kit with all the parts for both sides (which were an upgrade/improved over the 2004 TT ones).
