Okay - just don't shoot the messenger! Here is the photos that Porsche have just released on the SUV!

To me, the new Range Rover has just become even more desirable!

Released and effective March 4, 2002, Porsche has released first details of the new Cayenne five-door SUV, which will be launched in the fall of 2002.

Available versions:
- Porsche Cayenne S, powered by a 4.5 liter eight-cylinder unit, developing 250 kW and 420 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, top speed of 242 km/h.
- Porsche Cayenne Turbo, powered by a 4.5 liter eight-cylinder unit, developing 331 kW and 620 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, top speed of 266 km/h

Dimensions:
- length 4,782 mm (Turbo 4,786 mm)
- width1,928 mm wide
- height 1,699 mm
- wheelbase 2,855 mm

Transmissions:
- a six-speed Tiptronic S transmission standard for the Cayenne Turbo
- four-wheel drive with Porsche Stability Mangement
- low-range gears

Oops, when I looked at the first pic I thought 'maybe the other side looks better', but then I saw the other pic and couldn't believe they've made both sides the same.

The front is ugly as well, and is it my imagination or is everything underneath the ugly skin it just a 928 on steroids with another diff.

Makes a 1943 Willys look kind of pretty though!

I don't think the good 'ol doctor would approve of it.

Reminds me a little of the Audi RS4.
I am pleasanly suprised as I was expecting a BMW X5 or Mercedes ML competitor.

Don't tell me I'm the only guy who likes it. I love it. Plus, it's low to the ground. Nice front end. It looks like a machine that can handle as they said it would.

I'm very pleased by this marriage of sport utility and sportscar, given of course, that it is in arranged marriage, and I have to accept it!

But in the end, it looks great. I like both views and am much more delighted with it than I thought I would be.

Looks as though it could have been designed by Hyundai as much as Porsche. Nothing "grabs" me. It would probably look cleaner if the pillars between the doors were blacked out.

I'll keep my Chevy for hauling things.

You gotta admit, there's somthing to be said about an SUV that goes 165mph. I don't know what that something is, but it's something alright.

So, what'd you think? Is the NA V8 going to find its way into the back end of the 997? If so, would that leave the Boxster as the only Porsche with a flat six?

To me there is nothing, which clearly says "PORSCHE". It's a huge disappointment for me but one that I can't say I didn't see coming. It has neither distinction, charm or elegance and certainly does not really indicate "sporty" in the true sense of the word (perhaps the Dakar version will be better at that - or am I dreaming again).

If I were in the market for a fast, primarily paved / dirt road all-wheel-drive vehicle, I'd still go for the Audi All-Road or perhaps even the RSA as rob911 suggests. Or go for the Subaru WRX for all road fun, pocket the difference and buy the new 911 targa for on road fun.

I can only hope that there are enough P-enthusiasts out there to keep the brand alive until the day when Porsche decides/ sees they have a problem. The world is slooowly move back to cars of distinction as Porsche tries to look like everyone else. Seems to me there a decade and a half behind

Yeah...except the RS4 Avant looks WAAAAY better. And performance is likely on par. Hell, even the Allroad is in the same ballpark.

I have to agree with the sentiment that it looks like a Hyundai design...think new Tiburon with a hatch. Maybe it looks better in person

It's not aesthetically pleasing... even more ugly than the '99-01' 996 (btw I like the '02). The numbers are impressive, I was hoping the looks would match.

Aside from the basic concept of a Porsche 4 door 4wd high speed delivery van which ended the world as I knew it. This THING even looks cheap and nasty. Please say it's a wind-up!

Judging from these pictures, it just looks like a long list of compromises. A truly 'neither-nor' vehicle. It looks lower than the BMW SUV, which was probably done in the name of handling -- but that only makes it look like an Audi estate wagon with a Porsche-inspired kit-car nose. The headlights also look like there are maybe two camps at Porsche design, and that they ended up morphing both extremes.

Same with the back. Somebody wanted a hatchback, like a VW, and somebody wanted to 'preserve' the fastback line of the 911 line. It ended up being an ugly combinaion of both.

Is it an inspiring design, from any angle? Not that I can see. I hate to say it, but the BMW one looks better. Most of the Range Rovers look better. The Lexus looks better. If I were a family man who needed to get an SUV to please the wife, but wanted something with a sports-car feel, I wouldn't pick the Cayenne -- at least based on looks.

The performance numbers are pretty good, for a station wagon. But jeez, I know Porsche marketing has its theories, but who is supposed to get excited about this, exactly?

What is it they're looking to do with their company? I mean, more power to them, whatever that is (I've got mine, already). But... what's the point?

I have been waiting a long time for the "official photos." I have been looking at the Audi Allroad very closely. The Cayenne looks like a VW Golf from the rear. I hope it "looks" bigger in real life.
I own a '98 Boxster for everyday, a '70 911 S Coupe for fun. I really was going to give the Cayenne the benefit of the doubt.
