If you want the ultimate SUV ...it would still have to be a Hummer.

seriously, suv's, porsche or not, are no interest. the only good tht could come out of it would be if porsche sells a boatload of them, so the factory could direct some of that money to the racing teams, which lately are getting their butts kicked on the track.

and after watching f1, it's so disappointing porsche isn't represented in the most prestigious and storied racing on the planet. if jaguar and renault have teams, why not porsche?

wow that's interesting I was visiting Germany at the time they were testing the car out, of course I had no idea at the time...I didn't even own a Porsche yet, still it's interesting.

I think it looks kinda odd.......which is another way of saying I don't like it.

It looks more like a jacked up station wagon than an SUV. I like station wagons, but not this one. I don't like suvs in general, but I LOVE the Mercedes G500.

Good, bad, or indifferent. three observations:

1. This will be purchased by "off road wannabees", and most will never see anything but pavement.

2. Porsche may be in on the waning days of the SUV craze. These suicide machines will be with us for a while yet, and they will really be dangerous when they get so old that anyone can buy a used one, ignore it mechanically, and become a real danger to themselves and others. Ever see a right front brakeline "repaired" with a small Vise Grip? I did...ON A MOTOR HOME!! (I was in Phoenix getting emergency repairs done to my 944 at a Midas outlet and the manager said "Ya wanna see something scary?")

3. Cost alone may kill it in the long run, not only initial cost, but ongoing maintenance.If their "engineering" is as iffy as it is on their automobiles, there are long range problems on the far horizon. Only time will tell. Before everyone gets "uptight", I am referring to the fact that Porsche is used to building quirky machines that thrive on constant attention and have definite maintenance problems that many other vehicles simply do not have. Durability is NOT a Porsche strong suit IF the vehicle is not given constant attention. Folks want a "start and forget" SUV; not one that needs (under warranty) four figure upkeep on a specified basis to keep the warranty in effect

Thanks, Roger! That's exactly what I was thinking, I just couldn't place the car I was thinking of.

Don't really care for it, but hope they sell a bunch in the next couple of years, make their money back on it and put the engine in something that more closely resembles the Porsches I'm used to seeing. Maybe perhaps a new...hmmm...I don't know...a 928 GT!!

The front end looks like a 996 on steroids. I think the only part of the design that I like are the exhaust pipes. The BMW X5 looks much better than the Cayenne, IMHO.

i wish they would of called it a station wagon, because it sure as hell won't see anything more than gravel, so if you want to buy subaru outback on steriods this must be the ticket, don't really like it, it'd be interesting to see the first year of recalls that inevitable come out on every new vehicle, just for laughs like: turbine whine was deemed to loud for customers porsche adding additional sound deading and driver detachment, bucket seats to supportive for customers so porsche offers optional bench front seats, porsche recalls cayenne to add cup holders, etc....

I have to admitt that i do like the look of an x5 alot more, but if i had the money and had to choose, i would still get cayenne for the performance and the fact that i am a porschephile. There is definantly not enough sports car look to this suv to match it's performance, the front is ok but the rear is horrible. I think that it will look alot different in person becuase people will get an appreaciation for its size. The pictures make it look like a vw golf if you squint but in person i think we all might feel a bit different.

Porsche is just trying to tap the market, you can't blame them. lets all be glad that since Porsche decided to make an suv, they made a porsche suv. come on: 165 mph top speed and 0-60 in 5.6? You can't argue with those stats. Porsche knows that they need these sales either to survive or at least to expand so if this 2003 cayenne doesn't sell they will soon change the look to something that says 165 miles per hour alot better. You also have to realize that, yea it looks bad, but it must be doing something right because its a freakin suv with good enough aerodynamics and reduced drag to keep up with a brand new corvette.

So lets not all go bashing cayenne to all of our friends and saying what a horrible suv it is. Porsche needs the money, if they didnt they would not have done this. Promote it...we dont need another near bankruptcy like the 959 project in the late eighties. If Cayenne is sucessful then i think we will see a 998 or other new gt model very soon.
