Need advice from Cayenne owners

So my daughter will be graduating from college in December and I want to buy her a car as a graduation present. I've noticed that ~10 year old Cayennes can be had in the neighborhood of $15K (or less).

I know enough about 928's to know not to buy her one of those, but I don't know much about the pepper wagon. What should I be looking for? Do these cars have their own special problems? Is there a reason why used ones seem relatively cheap? Should I forget about it and look into another car?

TIA,
Alan

I saw the same and just bought an 04 CTT. Do they have their own problems? - I think you know the answer, use Google. I needed a modern car for DD, Cayenne are one of 10 safest cars possible to drive-just physics. They look great, you can find babied ones for not much money and if maintained properly I know some running hundreds of thousands of miles.
If you do your own work it's a lot more reasonable to drive into the sunset.

I just purchased a 2006 4.5 turbo S.........wow what a machine! The build quality is fantastic and feels like new car to drive. Oh did I mention this one has 107,000 miles on the clock!

I would highly recommend the Cayenne for a great car, maybe not the twin turbo for your princess but depends what she is used to driving.

Pretty reliable cars all in all. Ones in the age you are looking at have mostly had the common issues dealt with. Search here and on rennlist for what to look for. Finding them in well cared for condition is not too hard, but there are those around that have been rode hard and put away wet. Having a pre purchase inspection done is a good idea.

Who is paying to fuel it? maintain it? park it? insure it? There are reasons why many college grads drive Kia/Honda/Hyundai/Toyotas etc

Bought a 2006 tts 228kkm
Feel and drive fantastic
Brakes are spotted from sitting outside
I fell on my ass when i heard that the front rotors are selling for 1200 cdn dollar each
Calipers are cheaper
But on Cayenne and s version it is more than reasonable
They are great trucks

After thinking about it, I think the plan may be to by a Turbo S for myself and then pass on the Saab to her (has less than 80K miles on it). I call that a win-win!

You're on the right track. The Saab for the student and the Porsche for you.
I've had an'05 Turbo for 3 years now. I've put 30K miles on since I bought it. 92K total
Repairs have been: one fuel pump,
an intermediate drive shaft bearing,
the expansion tank ,
transmission cooling lines,
and the video on the Bose sound system has died.
worst thing has been the mileage. The computers in the car report around 17.5 actual is around 14 to 15.2 for a 32 mile commute to work on nice open roads.
But with this and a 996 C4 I go where I want when I want and enjoy getting there :-)

Thinking back of my fathers logic, he supported my interest in sports cars because they had two seats. They are nimble and can scoot out of harms way easier than a larger vehicle. Only one other person on board means less influence from the gang about the trouble one can find in numbers. And, it is less difficult to maintain. Sooooooo, instead of giving her your identity, why not let her be part of the decision and that way she becomes invested, rather than the hand me down.

I like your thinking Gporter, however what she wants is a VW Bug. She's had her last two vehicles given to her (my first car was a clunker I BOUGHT from my parents). And I will be helping her with her rent when she moves out from her mother's house soon aaaand, she has decided she is not going to grad school which is why I was going to buy her a new beetle in the first place...therefore she gets my hand-me-down.

I purchased a 2008 GTS about 18 months ago. 60k miles on it at time of purchase, 103k on it now. Its been a great vehicle. My wife was indifferent at first but then had to drive it for a few days when we were moving and she admitted it was really nice and she enjoyed driving it. My father made fun of it until we took a 900 mile ride in it. He finally admitted it was well built, a rocket and just a bit fun to drive.

Check rennlist.com for a more active Cayenne forum.

Bought our 2004 Cayenne TT in 2009 for $25k. As long as you don't mind doing some repairs on them, parts are getting reasonable. Get Durametric to reset things a few times a year. We have 173k miles and still runs strong. Replaced coils twice, driveshaft bearing, coolant pipes, brakes three times, tires, and plastic parts that degrade over time. This was coolant lines, coolant tank, and windshield washer tank. Replaced amplifier also. I would say for us putting over 100k miles on it since we bought it it has been a reasonable to own. IF you do the work yourself. We tow our car trailer and 25 foot travel trailer often with it also. Good luck in your search.
