84 Carrera w/transmission problem
Hello all,
After 34 years (about 9 in my ownership) my black/burgundy 84 Carrera driver has developed transmission trouble. It won't go into 2nd gear and I heard a "thunk" when I put it into 3rd. It will go into all other gears, but not 2nd. I've driven this car pretty hard on the back roads of NC, but never on a track. The engine runs great. The dash is a loss. I had the leather seats re-covered with the correct leather a few years ago. The rear seats are out and a RS carpet set (burgundy, but frankly not a good match) is installed. The soundproofing behind the rear seats is gone and replaced with Dynamat. The AC system is stripped out. The car weighs in at around 2500 lbs and handles very well. The original paint is tired and the sunroof seal needs replaced. The car has a current NC state inspection good through December. Tires and brakes are in good shape. Odo shows less than 70k, but I do not think that is accurate. Closer to 100 K, I think. I'm not at all in tune with current valuations. When I bought the car the economy was pretty much in the tank. Things seemed to have picked up since then. Looking for advice: Sell it or fix it. What is a ballpark price for a car like this? What is a ballpark price for fixing it? Any constructive comment very much appreciated. Thank you for your time, Al in NC |

Thanks for the feedback. Once I get a firmer idea of the valuation I'll most likely list it for sale with pics.

As it sits right now, it is $20k.
With the transmission issue repaired, tired paint, worn dash, unknown mileage and mismatching carpet, it is $30k. All of this is assuming no rust and a strong running engine. Either way, since you bought it 9 years ago, you'll walk away a winner.

"Things" do seem to have "picked up" on the economy......
Fix it and keep enjoying it. Joe in NH |

Could be something as simple as the shift coupler and other bushings that guide the shift tube and new trans fluid. Do you have any history of these items being replaced.

No record of the shift coupler/bushings being replaced but I did replace the trans fluid once.
